I'm 34. When I was younger, I didn't like disco. This was due to keeping in line with my dad's out-of-touch views. Then I started hearing a few songs I did like and it became a guilty pleasure. By my mid to late 20s I liked it, especially after realizing I was bi, and knowing the LGBTQ roots of the genre.

I think it is like depression with there being no cure for severe depression. These people we are talking about here are likely stuck in gender unease for which they have no cure either. Stuff like going to the clinic is like a quick fix since it does not get rid of the underlying symptoms.

NONE of those records, were part of the origins of Disco. Disco was about the extended, pronounced beat. That "doomp, doomp, doomp, doomp" was what made Disco "Disco".

Disco is the sountrack of my youth. Disco's were the meeting ground where we hung out, danced, drank & socialized to disco tracks played on delicious sound systems meant to entice one to the dancefloor. The overall mood on any given night was sensuous. Men and women dressed in their finest and showed off their best moves. Fun had by all! The disco sucks movement came from those ugly, ill dressed imdi individual's who were enraged and envious of those of us who were hip in our attire, could dance our asses off snd were proud in our demeanor. Sorry ugly rockers were not and still are not welcome to the party. Sorry kids.

You're wrong about Saturday Night Fever. If ever a film reflected what life was like in New York at the time, that was it. It was brutal, but reality. Why have you got a clear Chip on your Shoulder regarding it ? 😡

I said in the video. It's racist, xenophobic, and they assault a woman twice. It's objectively a bad movie and doesn't do a good job with representing disco culture. Don't let nostalgia stop you from seeing that.

I always said that Malificent was based off of classic queer camp icon Norma Desmond played by Gloria Swanson in the film Sunset Boulevard and I will DIE on this hill of thorns/poisonous spindle. 13:30 As well as Steven Universe, there’s also the Cartoon Network children’s show Craig of the Creek which has one of the main kids as a son of two fathers and it’s so lovely and cute

I always loved disco and was a little young to go out dancing in the 70s. But I made up for it in the 80s and 90s. I’m glad ppl. that like house music now understand the connection with disco. I’m seeing a big disco come back with the younger generation now and not the commercial disco and more the underground disco.

Accusing Classic Hollywood - or, more accurately, the moralists who applied pressure to Classic Hollywood - of "queer-coding" seems inconsistent to me. Remember, such people didn't simply want gay and queer people to "know their place"; they wanted gays and queers to never have existed in the first place. How can you possibly expect to deny the existence of queerness when you're constantly insinuating it? You can't simultaneously be homophobic on the one hand and completely ignorant of homosexuality on the other. Arguing that the Wicked Queen from SNOW WHITE is a coded lesbian, for example, is a bit of a stretch. It's far more likely that the character was modeled on Hollywood actresses who just happened to be queer in real life, such as Greta Garbo and Marlene Dietrich. It was the subtext that colored the portrayal, not the animators' design. And scapegoating Disney diverts attention from the real problem. Of course children are influenced by the entertainment media they consume; that's why they should not be allowed to consume so much of it in the first place! Disney cartoons were never intended as a substitute for real-world parenting, so parents who bring up homophobic children really only have themselves to blame.
@closetedhistory
@closetedhistory 4 ай бұрын
Queer coding in the early days of Hollywood was nuanced. During the time of the Hays Code, it was some of the only representation the community had. It's hard to look back with 2024 eyes and hold it to the same standards of today. As far as Disney, I think that they have a responsibility to balance the types of representation. It's fine to have Scar (or any other villain) be queer coded, but there needs to be positive representation too.
@SeasideDetective2
@SeasideDetective2 4 ай бұрын
@@closetedhistory So do you consider Disney until very recently to be homophobic, homophilic, neutral? What?
@closetedhistory
@closetedhistory 3 ай бұрын
I think it's more nuanced than that. Their portrayals of Queer coded villains is harmful without the balance of positive representation.

Look a the damage tv shows and movies did for blacks and latinos in the 70s and 80s and gangs and criminals. And even the news is bias in how it presents people compared to whites. Whites have an opioid epidemic blacks have a crack epidemic. If a white and black dose a same crime . The black person has a more severe sentence.
@closetedhistory
@closetedhistory 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, unfortunately, our representation in TV and movies has so much more impact than we think. When folks hear that stuff on their favorite show, and don't know any people in person who is part of a marginalized group, it can influence the way that person thinks of the group overall. And systemic oppression within our systems definitely perpetuates it.
@PuncherOfAbs
@PuncherOfAbs 6 ай бұрын
Well the opposite end is casual homophobia in movies where is presented as ok. A good example of that is Blacula where his first victims are to gay antique her to find his casket. When the cops discuss it.... they talk as if it’s not much of a loss since it happened to gay guys. The beginning of warlock it’s hard to say whether they’re being homophobic or edgy with his first victim ... again a gay antique collector. Probably fuck collectively as canon fodder among all the other victims
