Great video… I am just about to sleep on the floor as an experiment to see if it helps quality of sleep and also arm pain each morning from trapping nerves etc. cheers

How do you deal with moisture and mildew? That is number one problem when not using a slatted frame.

Hi, I've seen very thick futons on the internet. Did you buy the tatami and futon from a specific online store? I've been looking for one similar to the one in the video. I'm Brazilian.

I was lucky to find local options near me where I could buy both the futon and tatami. I've heard there are quite a few other futon options online that can be shipped though

Something more breathable between the mattress and the floor helps, in my case I use tatami but there are other options. And flipping the mattress regularly :)

Have you boticed any diffeence in comfort with the setup? I recently bought a xheap futon like mattress for my own experiment. I've gotten annoyed with my normal mattress Plus the extra space will be nice. I plan to tey it tonight. i tried the other night and the floor was too warm so need to move my fan for air flow.

This is definitely a thicker mattress than the typical futon, so for me it's the right balance between firm and soft :). I do still love all that I can move everything around to get a bit of extra space, even if I don't necessarily need the space to do anything in, just folding it up makes the room feel so much more brighter and open. so it's a win-win to me!

I've been sleeping on my futon for almost 10 years now, I don't expect to go back to a regular bed unless I develop an issue with mobility or strength to get off the floor. I added tatami mats only in the last three years, I've been slowly been covering the entire floor with tatami. The tatami also acts as a sound deadener. I also have a nice zip on cover so it looks good when folded.

I don't recommend this at all, I had booked it and went to the cruise spot and they cancelled on the spot. Even on the next day! Check the schedule and don't include the cruise.

Sleeping on a futon is NOT sleeping on the floor! Leave it to humans to make sleeping on the floor super complicated. All you need is a floor. Clearly most people can't do it....they think they are, but nope.

The objectively best way to sleep and use up as little space as possible is mixing both. Place a thin mattress/futon on top of a big storage container. Use this space to place basically most of your stuff and have a raised sleeping position at from first on the floor. The only other option which is even remotely comparable in efficiency is to place a rollable futon in the middle of the room and ALWAYS put it away after sleeping to use the floor as yoga, workout, walking area. You only need those three things: sleep, workout/movement and storage. And horizontal space is Carly more valuable than vertical because it can serve all three purposes, where vertical only can storage. Therefore it is vital that the horizontal space either be multi functional, OR be only used for one thing at a time. Which is why you either use it for BOTH sleep and storage. OR use it for sleep ONLY when sleeping and then manually use it as workout/movement afterwards (by manually removing the mattress every day.) These are the two options, unless you go overboard with resources like a too big house etc. Which by itself is sub optimal and not ideal, and ideal is what life is about striving for, like a compass. Having a vastly to big use of building space is like eating excessively at McDonald's, so stop it, get some help. And thankfully this is the simple core logical principle you need to optimize your personal "pod".

My brother wanted to gift me a opera thicket for birthday , it became a futon since I had the idea of sleeping on one since I never like soft mattresses , too saggy and I enjoyed sleeping on the floor in front of our old fireplace. So relaxing.

I took my mattress, put a fitted sheet on it. Turned it on its edge and tacked it to a wall. Then, I pushed my box spring against it. I cut plywood to fit on top of the box spring. I bought a Shiki Futon and placed it on top of box springs. The room feels less cluttered and more open. I love it. I've had my box spring and mattress on the floor for years.

2 yrs ago I started sleeping in my hammock. I like the firmness of a comfy pad on floor but toss & turn a lot & hate getting up. It was great when I was younger but now I hate crawling up from a pad if camping I must use a cot or prefer a hammock. In my room yes!!!! I love the extra space & clean area seeing under it. I have a hippie room. Baskets of wicker, macrame plant hangers, potted plants, candles, a love seat. All open space. Also, I took the doors off my closet. It is organized w/ a storage cedar chest under & hat boxes. I enjoy seeing my organized things.

We in India have been using it forever..it's called tulai and is stuffed with cotton.I have a solution to the trapping moisture.. We use a chatai which is like a jute mat underneath..this chatai could be rolled and put away just like the futon..I have been using it since I have had travelled to US, Canada, Germany etc and it is very effective

Why would it get more moisture on the floor than a regular bed?
@SameraAbroad
@SameraAbroad 3 ай бұрын
Moisture can collect when you don't have a breathable layer between your futon / bed / blanket (and don't move it often enough). In my case I use tatamis for air circulation, but the same purpose is with other types of wooden slats, bed frames or structures to keep some air moving between :)
