This song has nothing to do with Black Americans collective fight for Civil Rights in America. Many people think Donny Hathaway wrote the song "Someday We'll All Be Free" about Black Americans and/or the Civil Rights Movement . This isn't true. First, Donny didn't write the lyrics and secondly the song has nothing to do with the Civil Rights Movement or Black Americans in general. It is a song written for and about Donny and what he personally was going through as he fought his demons. On January 13, 1979, Donny Hathaway was found dead on the side walk outside of the Essex House Luxury Hotel in New York City, where he had been living. Since the glass from the window had been carefully removed and there were no signs of struggle, his death was ruled a suicide. The last studio album that he recorded was "Extensions of A Man" in 1973. "Extensions Of A Man" contained the single "Someday We'll All Be Free", which was written by Edward Howard about the mental pain that Hathaway was experiencing. After Hathaway recorded the song, he listened to the play back of the studio cut. Hathaway cried as he listened to the song for the first time. After Hathaway's death, this disclaimer was added to the liner notes of "Extensions of A Man" by Edward Howard: "Donny is no longer here, but the song [Someday We'll All Be Free] gathers momentum as part of his legacy... Donny literally sat in the studio and cried when he heard the playback of his final mix. It's pretty special when an artist can create something that wipes them out." Howard also added: "It was a spiritual thing for me... What was going through my mind at the time was Donny, because Donny was a very troubled person. I hoped that at some point he would be released from all that he was going through. There was nothing I could do but write something that might be encouraging for him.'"

Just listened to this again after a few years, and this time noticed the influence of Michael Jackson's "The Lady In My Life" on some of the chord progression choices and on her vocal improv toward the end. Such an incredible performance of Donny's incredible song.

Really dont like her voice, nor the performance despite the beautiful setting, piano, etc.. she just does not have "it". its out of tune, she messes up a major/minor note in the first half minute, the riffs dont go smoothly. This does not reflect how I think about Alicia as a person, but as a performer. Just listen to the Take6 rendition of this song..

Beautiful song. Written in 1969 or 70. By Donny Hathaway. Interestingly he committed suicide, like “Sasha”. He struggled with mental illness . Was an amazing talent. Still miss him to this day. But we do have Laila Hathaway, his daughter who is an amazing singer like her dad. RIP Donny.

She usually shouts but she wasn't shouting in this performance. She's belting with better technique here. If she was shouting it would sound blaring and very loud. Her mixed voice here is very light. She's belting with more ease here than she does now.
