the amount of content is honestly insanely impressive, I definitely had no real idea about Simpligon before this pack but they've certainly outdone themselves with the content provided

There is a package of details in this, like detailed videos are shown in the video. Can you share an app with us so we can easily check it? Can you open the states and record a video for us? and this asset is optimized for mobile devices?

I'm sorry, I don't quite understand what you are asking for... can you elaborate a little bit please and I'll see if I can help? When you say, "can you share an app" what do you mean by that? When you ask for me to "open the states" what do you mean by that?

Ive seen people comment that the performance is poor utilizing their assets, I'm quite new to Unity - what are your thoughts on that comment?
@StephenChepp
@StephenChepp 4 ай бұрын
@@CyclingYYC I haven't had any real issues using them. Just like most things in game development, your project's performance will be a sum of its parts, so it's not just a matter of the art assets themselves, but rather all the different things in your project like lighting, particles, your character controller, physics, size of a scene, etc... hell, even just having sloppy/unoptimized code can have a significant impact on overall performance... This is one of those areas that I wish more game developers took time to understand the hardware end of things and how the synergy between hardware, your OS, other software and the game all play into one another... It's something I really encourage (and give extra credit to) my students to learn because it's so critical to good game dev. Without seeing the projects in question, it's impossible to know for certain what might be causing their issues, but I somehow really doubt the Synty art is to blame. Just looking at the Synty assets from a technical level the poly/triss count is very reasonable, which generally means (and I am significantly oversimplifying this for the sake of trying to keep this reply at a reasonable length) less calls to your GPU, which, in turn, translates to generally better overall performance. Again, that's a huge oversimplification, but I think it's the easiest way to put it. Anyway, hope that helps and let me know if you have any more questions 😄

Great review, I have a question for you, does this asset work in the Unreal Engine?
@StephenChepp
@StephenChepp 4 ай бұрын
Thanks! The asset is purchased through the Unity Asset Store, so it comes as a Unity Package... However, like with most art assets (especially low poly ones) you actually can transfer them out to be used in other engines. There are a handful of solutions for doing direct conversions (Autodesk has a converter and there are tons of other free ones) or you can use something like blender to import the .fbx files and then convert them out into .obj files. This usually converts low poly assets perfectly, but typically the higher the fidelity of an art asset, the less accurate the conversion will be.

@@StephenChepp Ok… good to know…I asked because I read some reviews and one guy said that he tried to use it the Unreal Engine, and that it was not very good, he did mentioned that they were supposed to release it on the Epic Marketplace at some point, but It’s not there yet. Was just wondering if you might know, thank you for responding, and for the info.
@StephenChepp

@@synastershred2269 I can see if I can find some time to try to convert some of the models over to .obj, but I am not 100% sure how quickly I can get it done if I am being honest... Its been hard enough to meet the 1 video a week promise with everything going on right now.... I did check and they appear to have a CGTrader page for it (and they are running a 60% off sale for that as of writing this): www.cgtrader.com/3d-models/exterior/cityscape/simpligon-universe That would probably be your best option honestly, because it appears you get the blender project files with that... tbh, I might actually pick that up given how good of a deal it is :P
@StephenChepp
@StephenChepp 4 ай бұрын
I should also probably clarify... the general rule is that most low poly assets tend to make it through the format exchange fine, but there are always bound to be some exceptions to the rule and if someone else did try it and it didn't go well, then this might be that exception.
@StephenChepp
@StephenChepp 4 ай бұрын
@@synastershred2269 Soooo... after reading some of the reviews from some people on the CGTrader page, it may be best to just pass on this one for Unreal until they release a proper package. I'll still try to fine some time (now sure where, but I'll try to pull it from somewhere) to get Unreal reinstalled and convert some of the models over from fbx to obj. But, if what the other reviews are saying is true, I somehow doubt I am going to have more luck than they did. This might just be one of those assets that doesn't convert well.

@StephenChepp
@StephenChepp 4 ай бұрын
I apologize for the delay in response. There is not any HUD stuff int he pack at the time of posting this, its only an environmental pack. They do have a separate HUD pack that they offer though. It also looks like they may have updated the asset with enemy stuff after I initially recorded the video, so I might try to do an update for this at some point that showcases those.

I would say that the licencing is pretty standard and fair. No royalties are required if you pay for the asset. Not sure of any paid art assets that require you to pay royalties actually. But, yeah, I can try to talk about that a little more in depth in future videos if you think that would be valuable.

Then I got busy with a bunch of other stuff (you know, day job, servant leadership and all that jazz), but I own something like upwards of 8k assets on the asset store, so rest assured, there will be more, but it's just going to take time since we are going into the busy season for me.

I don't repeat myself! I don't repeat myself! Obviously, I'm kidding. The interiors do look a little bit bland, but there's another asset called Simple Apocalypse Interiors - Cartoon Assets (also by Synty). I think that it could be used in combination with the apocalypse pack to allow for good design
@StephenChepp
@StephenChepp Жыл бұрын
Agreed. To be fair, there are a lot of low poly clutter assets that you can spruce up the asset with. My biggest critique was really the lack of modularity. When I pay that much for an asset, I want to be able to really go to town with the level design end of things and having a bunch of static prefabs that prevent that, for me at least, decreases the value of that asset. Like I said too, it's odd because most synty assets are hyper modular, so I'm not quite sure what the thought process this one was.
@dankodev
@dankodev Жыл бұрын
@@StephenChepp Great point! Also, now that I think about it, you could go in and manually break any one of the models into modular pieces if you need to. It is a bit tedious but still doable in blender.
@StephenChepp
@StephenChepp Жыл бұрын
@@dankodev True. And if you buy it directly from the Synty store you get the source files too, so it makes it a lot easier to do that... but, as you say, it's really tedious and to be honest, kind of a pain in the ass, and for that price point, it's not something that I feel is justified... especially when there are a number of other Synty assets that are modular and can serve that purpose just as well. I donno, overall I just kinda felt that the price point was not on par with the overall value of the assets... which is unfortunate because I like (and own) almost all of their assets. Anyway, are you liking the videos? I've got a ton more incoming, but with all the Unity drama lately, I've been holding off uploading more.
@dankodev
@dankodev Жыл бұрын
@@StephenChepp Yeah, I like your vids! The unity situation is definitely something that you should talk about. Personally, I'm going to stay with Unity just because it is the cheapest out of all non open-source game engines (even with the new changes). It's either 2.5% rev share or a self-reported install fee, whichever is cheaper for you. Even though I don't fully trust the management, Unity is still better than Godot for 3D and advanced 2D. Godot got a ton of new funding, but it's going to take years for it to catch up to Unity. Just my two cents, haha.

I have long since had this asset in my sights, I love how much they have added in terms of props and items, but its a total killer that the buildings, the houses in particular, are not modular. Thats what I was hoping for so thats too bad. Thanks for this review.
@StephenChepp
@StephenChepp Жыл бұрын
I'm glad the review was helpful. The modularity, or in the case lack there of, was a real bummer for me too, but the good news is if you are looking for a package Synty that has modular house parts, then you are in luck. The following two are the best ones from them for "regular" modern modular houses in my opinion : prf.hn/l/jWYG8Xz and prf.hn/l/8xEkVjX I will be doing reviews of both of these at some point in the near future, but I wanted to get you the links ASAP because the unity spring sale just started and both of them are on sale right now if you wanted to pick them up at the reduced price.
@Cloud-Yo
@Cloud-Yo Жыл бұрын
@@StephenChepp I appreciate the links. I actually own these two, and because of it I almost took it for granted that the post apoc pack would have the same modular building pieces. For some reason a doubt crept in and I was lucky to find your review. The appeal of the already "ruined" assets was what had me on hook. But Ill just modify the other ones myself and spend a little time instead of having to build them from scratch :)

@StephenChepp Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I have a ton more coming soon, so please keep an eye out for them if you liked this one. As for the controller, it can be found here: prf.hn/l/61xGy4X ... I am working on a review for it now, but it still needs some work before its ready to upload. But, keep an eye out for that too if it interests you. I will actually be doing reviews for a bunch of character controller assets and different templates and frameworks over the next year. Regarding the controller, crouching is not a mandatory feature with it, in fact there are different pre-set profiles you can use and one of them is a simple "walking simulator" profile, but the really advanced locomotion has crouching, sliding, prone/crawling and more.

Hey! Thanks for sharing your experience with the tool! I was curious about what you mean about "cloud based collaborative tools" in your blog post. AFAIK, the only support offered by Unity for version control is Asset Server, (which is actually another $500 license on top of Unity Pro) which does not actually do scene/prefab merging.
