We have them here on the plains and grasslands of South Dakota. Most of these trees were brought in to create windbreaks. I love how they look in this vast landscape.

I have a ranch in Northwest Wyoming, in a semi-arid zone, elevation about 5,00 feet, at the base of the Northern Rockies. To my eye Russian-Olive trees are attractive; I think the silver leaves really "lighten up" the landscape. More importantly they provide benefits, mainly serving as a great windbreak. The key is ensuring they're planted with two other types of trees / bushes... I have Ash and Juniper (which is native to Wyoming), so that you can have a real multi-layered shield against the wind. They can get a little aggravating when the upper branches / limbs die because they're sort of unsightly that way, and it's not the easiest pruning job in the world. It's odd because of a plant that is so drought tolerant, they use up a lot of water when they can. All in all, for me, they're a net positive.

That was way too easy to move for a trumpet vine 😂. Definitely Virginia creeper. You can scoop those right out of the ground before they get big. Although I'm surprised it died eventually. I've transplanted some multiple times with delays between planting and they are perfectly fine. I left some in plastic bags with no water but the initially moist dirt that came with in a room with practically no light for 2 weeks. Not having gotten around to them I shoved them in a random pot on the driveway in full shade and maybe watered once during severe drought of less than 1" rain per month in record high temps. They weren't particularly big but healthy looking otherwise. Finally I stuck them in a rocky, dry area of full shade that hardly anything will grow just before it snowed. All 3 are 4-5' high and growing faster every week. Digging up trumpet vine.... Even 1 year old plants had roots over 2' down with the runners about the length of my forearm below the top soil before I hooked my fingers under one. I gave up and chopped off the root of any older plants when I hit 4' straight down. They have no root ball. If they aren't still part of a runner going sideways they are more like a cream colored carrot with minimal side roots but a neverending one that apparently can go 10'+ deep. Nearly all vines can be and usually benefit from trimming the top down to 2-3' length before digging them up to move. It also makes it very easy because you just start at the base, go about 2' up depending on how big it is and cut it off. No untangling needed. Virginia creeper is also best moved early in the spring when it just has buds. However, I haven't found a way to kill it without trying to. I'd bet on growing conditions rather than transplanting being the problem. It never grows in the low areas of marshes or streams. Always several feet up a steep slope or on raised areas above anywhere that sees a lot of water. In a drainage ditch with saturated soil even just part of the year would be the exact opposite of where I see it growing wild. Most sources list it's only soil requirements as "well drained" and watering requirements in containers as regularly but allow to dry between. I'm sure established, mature plants would survive short yearly flooding but young and recent transplants might succumb to root or stem rotting if the ground remains too wet for long.

Pre-emergent ... the terminology is a bit misleading; technically; a pre-emergent kills weeds as they sprout from their seeds; the seeds are not prevented from germinating, actually; furthermore, seeds that remain dormant (the seed that did not sprout) remain un-affected.
