I was just playing this recently... I kinda "meh" out of the game after getting to the fire mountain. I think I am burning out on the "action rpg" games because it's just mindless hack and slash and in this particular ARPG's problem is the "tedium". You have 4 slots where you have to "share" special items with or potions. I can't tell you how annoying it is to keep switching my equipment around every time I came to a puzzle, boulder, or light bridge. I am really SICK of this kind of game design. If I need an item to get past an area of the game... Make it function like it does for Zelda LTTP... when I get a glove... it's always equipped and I don't need to visit the equip menu to switch it out. Same goes for "limited inventory". I hate it... hate it a lot!

I think Miyazaki himself said that he wants to stop making souls games after Elden ring. I think he will take the gameplay from souls games and make a game with deeper RPG systems next and throw those other elements from souls games out the window. I think he just used the souls games as a bridge to make the RPG he wants to actually play. He likes games like everquest the most, and most likely wants to make something like it.

Although I get most of the points made, I don't understand the necessity of the video. If Elden Ring and it's dlc aren't your cup of tea, just stick to the old games. I've played DS1 and Bloodborne several dozen times each. I love Demons Souls, and Sekiro is probably my favorite Fromsoftware game. Ds2 I've only played to platin and my ds3 platin run I've paused for several months now, because i just can't get myself to like the game. And Elden Ring? I have not played it to this day, because it's too big, I don't like the open world, and I miss the genius level design of Dark Souls 1. My point is: It's ok to not like a game, but it's not always necessary to rant about it.

What's that? The Homm II Grass Theme in a video about Xanadu Next? My friend, how can you combine two of my favorite ever games like that? Instant respect. In all seriousness, I love Xanadu Next so much. It feels like a fantasy game from a bygone era where things could be presented more simply and sincerely. It's kind of like White Lie in Black states and the general theme about The Knight's arc: he's the last true hero of that era, the last knight in that land who stands at the tuning of ages. It's melancholic but beautiful, just like you said, and captures just about everything I love in fantasy.

Dragon's Crown is fantastic. I got back into it a few months back, and it sunk its fangs into me all over again. Ended up beating the game on normal with every character and then immediately jumped into hard and currently beat it with Amazon(best character), Fighter, and Wizard. I would love if we got a sequel at some point with some new characters added. Specifically a brawler/martial artist so I can punch monsters in the face. The boss fights are all great, the Killer Rabbit boss fight is my favourite one in the game. I lost it when it appeared. And you can't sing the praises of a Vanillaware game without mentioning the unfairly delicious looking food. I wanna eat a dragon and the Killer Rabbit.

You did not really miss anything the focus on fromsoft changed. You are kidding yourself if u think the early games are not difficult. In thise games, the difficulty was from exploration. Dying for the umpteenth time in Blighttown, or central yharnam. Facing a boss was mich less about the boss but more about the path to the boss itself. If u have reached a boss, you will get it in usually less than 10 tries, but when u die u need to traverse a full area again (literally in case of Demons). That is where the frustration of the older games came in. You say that in the older games, bosses could be beat in a single sttempt feasibly, but to what extent can that be said about the areas. If someone says I traversed the depths on my first attempt, never got cursed, or never got lost, I would 100% give them the same side eye I give when people say they beat say Radahn first try. The difficulty focus has changed. People who enjoy the boss fight itself, will thrive in a game like ER, but ER is not a dungeon crawler. Its an open world action RPG, increasingly the focus is moving towards the action aspect. If you enjoy the bosses if they end quickly, you have options. I see spirit summons in ER, like shields in DS. Is it possible to beat the game without them? Yes. Do they make the game unquestionably easier wirh little to no downsides? Yes. Do thy have choices, where some of them are insanely broken, while some are boderline useless? Yes. If u do not summon then I would like to ask why? And if u summon and still dont enjoy the game then I am sorry, I understand u, but cannot sympathise.

Before Elden Ring the only souls like game i had played was LoTF (the original) and i enjoyed the story but hated the gameplay because I'm simply shit at souls games. But i decided, against better judgment because of my previous experience, to buy Elden Ring, not because i wanted the challenge or because i was looking forward to sweating it, but because of the story, the lore, the ambient of the world and everything around it. The gameplay was the thing that i cared for the LEAST (even though i was concerned because i expected to get my ass kicked, and i did get it kicked but it went better than i expected). What im trying to say is that as an outsider that didn't play des, ds, ds2, ds3, bd or sekiro; ive always associated the souls genre with having a rough time, and i had it but i enjoyed the story so much that i didn't mind how much i struggled with Maleinia (actually she was the only one i looked foward to the challenge due to the fame she had), how much i HATED damned Romina, Gaius was annoying, and CRadhan was frustrating but well i beat him prepatch and yeah it was shit, infuriating and almost unfair at times but i expected nothing less, and enjoyed the oversll experience. Those are the only bosses I actually remember for how long it took me and how helpless i felt. Yeah Placidusax, Malekith, Mogh, Bael, etc were tough and took me multiple tries but i felt like i was falling shot by just a little and really enjoyed those fights. Some i did beat first try or with just a couple. Idk, as someone new to FromSoft i loved this game along with its tough moments. Took me A LOT of hours, probably more beacuse of my lack of skill with this sort of games. But it was definitely worth the money, the time and sweat it took at times.

Thanks for putting this vid out! ^_^ I think I can kinda understand how you'd like some games more than others, despite them all featuring what can only be described as "anime writing". I feel like the Japanese-style of modern story-telling is something I can generally describe as "front-loaded exposition", which I know is also prevalent in a lot of Western media, but there's something that feels distinct that JP writers seem to do that I feel can be traced as far back as 80's Gundam-era, and even Tezuka's Astroboy. Another way I would describe it is how many comic pages or anime scenes the writer is willing to put between the introduction of a new term / concept / phenomenon / historical event, and the definition of it. I feel it then becomes standout if entire chapters or episodes can occur between these. Maybe it's a measure of how much the writer trusts their audience to hold onto their foreshadowing? So the most egregious example I can think of would be _Senjou no Horizon,_ that actively tries to fill out a glossary in the first hundred pages, much like most other JP light novels and web novels. At least Kojima makes his Metal Gear villains deliberately grandiose in framing and characterization, where despite the modern setting of CQC and fully-automatic weaponry, we really would believably sit there and listen to the boss grand-stand in their designated set-piece. It's why we even remember them years after playing. On the other hand, foreshadowing can drag on to the point that the reader loses interest. I fell off of _Attack on Titan_ long before Eren reached his dad's basement. There's a balance to be made between foreshadowing of 15 seconds and foreshadowing for half a decade. Matsuno, meanwhile, is perfectly content to let the story play out, even in places where the player can't see. In _FF Tactics,_ a lot of events of great historical significance happen and you'd only ever find out about them if you looked in the Chronicle section. It's just context, the Whys and Hows of things that you don't even know to understand that Ramza is trying to rescue his sister from Zodiac demons while Delita conspires to usurp the throne in a quest of revenge. But if you actually did look, then the skirmishes and enemies make sense. They *still* make sense, the context just added to the overall experience of the world. Phoenix Wright does set-up and foreshadowing, and maybe it's a consequence of being a murder-mystery detective game, but Ghost Trick does foreshadowing really well too, and it's squarely in the puzzle genre! Video essays in other fields by other creators have discussed how Japanese website design is heavily influenced by a cultural habit of being up-front about contracts and information, and I feel that this is what plays into this "front-loaded exposition" that seems to prevail in most modern Japanese writing, but I digress. I haven't even read that many stories from what could be called the Classical Japanese genre, anyway.

@@GIoominary I think despite the later later disc section flaw on Gears,Xenogears is still the best among the 3 Xeno. While Xenosaga is decent it stumbles in the second games through it execution and gameplay, slog it may. It ended on good note with Xenosaga 3 though, though i feel like they really cut things down, rush some part to condense all the plot it since it became apparent there wouldn't be any more continuation at all. The Xenoblade series is divisive to me. The first game was fine it just hard to get invested with the cast, but still way better than 2, the second one was pretty cliche, more mainstream type of story, battle is pretty fine though, jusy the enemy felt like sponge at most times i dont think i particularly enjoyed their dynamics and unlikeable character especially the main trio, and the story is pretty forgettable, pacing wise it was a slog, and the gacha element was a problem, the third one was more balanced than the previous but the whole Blade series is not as interesting, nuanced or has depth as Xenosaga, much less Xenogears. I still think despite Xblade has more mainstream fan,it still Xenogears > Xenosaga > Xenoblade to me overall

I've been hearing these same minority held opinions lately and I have my gripes with these games myself, so Im open to hearing y'all's arguments. But I've yet to actually get any clarity on what your guys arguments even are, you guys make criticisms with no constructive feedback, or what to do better. Another point of contention I have is the point that demons souls and dark souls were better and that after those games, they veered off into a whole other direction, which first off, I dont understand where you think they meeded to go? You never really make that clear, only that you obviously have a preference to just those two games, but what do you expect fromsoft to do? Cause you make it sound like as I said, they veered off into a different direction, but all I see is a straight line, how the games have evolved has been pretty linear, even taking your criticism for the enemies in elden ring with their wind up, delayed attacks, they started including that to catch spam and panic rollers to get them to think more about their moves more, which you may not like but, its a clear evolution and if the games stayed the way they were since demons souls, people would be complaining of a lack of improving. Im not saying your doing this, but I wanted to include it because its something I have been noticing more of lately. Im always blown away at how toxic from stans can be, and was annoyed by it like most, but then looking up certain posts online and seeing people act just as toxic against fromsoft games, especially towards people being very cordial and decent, I started to understand where alot of the stans, who blindly and spitefully defend the games were coming from, and its the same that Ive seen in these comments. People see shit in such black and white binary terms, that they seem to not understand that two sides can be equally idiotic and toxic, because its two sides of the same coin, but the coin itself is the issue. Both treat each other as the boogeyman, acting more and more out of pocket because of each pissing one another off and pushing each other farther into their extreme and delusional positions. Far as Im concerned, Fromsoft has some glaring issues, that this newest dlc bares to the world and Ive only really been satisfied with only a few creators that have been able to point them out, because they dont try and choose a side of the "fromsoft culture war" and try their best to look at it all honestly amd deeply, without being stuck on that idiotic coin.

I agree to some extent. The bosses were the best in Demon Souls where you found a week point or special strategy. Now they are mostly bullet (sword) sponges with very little strategy other than jumping or rolling at the right time. But the rest of game is so awesome it does not bother me. Bosses are a small part of the game. Exploration and dungeons are the main game.
