ABAKUA IS THE SECRET SOCIETY CREATED IN CUBA BY THE ENSLAVED IBIBIOS OF IBIONO-IBOM ENYENISON ENKAMA: (kzbin.info/www/bejne/kJS9dodjmLJjh9E), In the song by ENYENISON ENKAMA, there is no mention of EFIK anywhere, but that doesn't discount the fact that they, though much less in number, were also involved in the creation of ABAKUA. In my opinion, the song is the ABAKUA IBIBIO version of "BY THE RIVERS OF BABYLON." Nowhere in the song did they mention EFIK. So, how did the Efiks get the idea that ABAKUA was founded by the Efiks in Cuba? During the Atlantic slave trade era, Efik slave traders used to go on "hunting" raids up and down the Cross River and its tributaries, raiding the surrounding villages and farming communities for Ibibios to kidnap, transport to Calabar and ultimately deliver to European slave ships. IBIONO-IBOM, which shares a common border with ITU, was obviously the place where some of the Ibibios were seized. IBIONO-IBOM is a short distance from the ancient IBIBIO KINGDOM known as IBOM (now AROCHUKWU). IBIONO pronounced IBI-Y-IONO, means DWELLINGS. IBOM means NATION or KINGDOM. IBIONO-IBOM means the DWELLINGS of the NATION (KINGDOM). That sounds like a place where people (probably the priests, diviners, chieftains, elites and other important personalities) stayed after being forced out of IBOM following the loss of that territory to the victorious IGBO-ARO (AKPA?)-EKOI ALLIANCE. The Efiks were very, very small in number, and depended heavily on the Ibibios for practically everything, including the victims needed to support their nefarious trade in human beings. The Efiks are a branch of Ibibio. Their ancestors, numbering approximately 3, 000 - 4, 000, were chased out of Uruan after losing a bitter religious war. Uruan is an ancient city in Ibibioland. The Efiks trekked over to the territory now known as CALABAR where the QUAS, EFUTS and the EJAGHAMS gave them pieces of land to settle upon. The Abakua songs that I have heard are mostly songs of nostalgia and emotional yearnings after IBOM and IBIONO-IBOM. They're really the communal laments of Cuba's Abakua adherents about being exiled from their ancestral IBIONO-IBOM homeland. It could be that the name EFIK emerged long after they---the IBIONO-IBOM PEOPLE---had already left Africa. So, to them, everyone is IBIBIO. If that's true, then it means the name, EFIK, is really a mid-18th to late 18th century invention. OBIO IFIK means the land of oppression. OBIO = LAND or COUNTRY. IFIK = OPPRESSION. The oppression being a life in enslavement. The dwellers of that land---OBIO IFIK-- became known as EFIKS---THE OPPRESSED. In Ibibio, if you say, 'ESUK EFIK ENYE', that means he's being oppressed or they're oppressing him or her. To my knowledge, there are three other places in Nigeria named for SLAVERY and OPPRESSION.
