At 2:46, that verse is how I remembered this lovely hymn, from when it was sung at a wedding at the Episcopal church I grew up in.

This one song probably did more to hold America together into what we became. In early 1863 when it was performed the country was falling apart in our civil war.

This has to have a different meaning for you Brits. Of course most Americans under 50 are poorly educated and know little of the history or who Julia Ward Howe was. They are descendants of more recent immigrants not here in 1862 when Julia Ward Howe's song was published in the Atlantic monthly. But I did have paternal ancestors who were here in the early 1800's, and I Know this was the product of a strong abolitionist (as was her husband who had founded a school for the blind). Inspired by a meeting with Lincoln at the White House and hearing Union troops sing "John Brown's Body" to the same tune.

Watch the American Marine Corps band and choir sing, "The Battle Hymn of the Republic." Yes the USA is a Constitutional Republic, not a Democracy. Our Constitution says, "The government must ensure a Republic form of government."

Spectacularly, beautiful. But there is a mistranslation. The lyrics being sung are: “and keep us in his grace”, not “and keep us still in grace”.

It really is not fair. First, we beat the British in our revolution; then, we steal their national anthem as one of our national hymns, and we keep trying our best to one-up them. Yet, they keep having more really great patriotic hymns than us. Jealousy just has no future! I love this one! Thank God for great English composers and music!
