I've also heard that concrete and such are actually quite damaging to trees. It suffocates the roots, leading them to receive insufficient water and oxygen. Trees tend to try and break from under concrete, and due to the way cities are structured, they can not be removed in certain places. Consider how in places with more plant life, the trees (the bark, not just the leaves) look more vibrant.
