I worked for a start-up in Silicon Valley back BEFORE the internet was in-home and saw the seeds of greed germinate near the shadows of Mount Diablo. How fitting.
@the_midnightcitizenpodcast20 сағат бұрын
No doubt. Greed masked as "disruption" has always been the story of business in America. It just sucks that it's now becoming THE story of American government also. Like everything else they make out there in Silicon Valley, there seems to be a planned obsolescence about democracy now.

We're very fortunate to have a couple of popcorn palaces here in Chicago to this day. For anyone visiting, the Music Box is an awesome place to spend viewing time, along with a bite and a cocktail before the organ begins playing in anticipation of the curtain rising.
@the_midnightcitizenpodcast4 күн бұрын
Yeah, I've always wanted to visit the storied Music Box. I've watched a lot of stand-up shows and concerts that were taped there. The Birmingham equivalent is the Alabama Theater. It has an organ they play before movies and such.

I hope the new Anderson movie doesn't wind up like Megalopolis, the trailer looked good and Francis Ford Coppola has made a bunch of masterpieces, however Megalopolis was just not good. I did enjoy Licorice Pizza a lot though, that was a wild movie.
@the_midnightcitizenpodcast6 күн бұрын
I don't think you'll need to worry about the new PTA not being, at the very least, interesting. I haven't seen "Megalopolis" yet, but I haven't talked to a single person yet who has really liked it. Even the Coppola apologists. Coppola made some of the greatest movies ever, but that was a long time ago.

I don't know, man. You should definitely put more effort into decorating that office. I know it's an adjunct situation but it's still a semester of your life. Like at least put up a framed copy of your diplomas on the walls and some dvds on the bookshelf. That bookshelf looks so anemic. Put your ON AIR sign on it. How about some movie posters on the walls. Get your wife to decorate the office. I don't know if the college kids are indifferent to Tik Tok or if they're embarrassed and just don't want to admit they ate Tide Pods or did any of that other stupid shit. The sign off is KEEP YOUR EYES OPEN!

A grammar school I knew as a kid spent his summers working as a house painter. I was surprised and somehow embarrassed for him. It seemed like a letdown or more of a comedown. Coming down from lower middle class to working class for the summer. I grew up working class, too, by the way. I'll not comment on Chick filA out of respect to you and your audience.
@the_midnightcitizenpodcast7 ай бұрын
You are my audience, so throw out whatever you want about the Chick-Fil-A thing. I know mine is kind of an unpopular opinion, but, at the same time, I really don't have all the information -- only what the media and a few commenters have given me. The only thing I can imagine is that letting a bunch of kids loose in a restaurant where people are trying to do their jobs might be a little chaotic and unsafe, so hopefully, the franchise knows what it's doing and how to structure it. I, too, was surprised as a kid when I discovered some of my teachers worked second jobs to make their rent. I remember being at the mall once and saw my middle school science teacher working the men's department at Penny's. There's no shame in it, really; teachers have always been underpaid, and generally take the job because they love it. They shouldn't have to work any more than their 8-10, 11, 12 hour-or-more work days demand, but many of them also go into the profession knowing that's part of it. The only teachers I know who don't have a secondary income are the ones who have a spouse who also works a high-paying job.

@the_midnightcitizenpodcast8 ай бұрын
It may be! But that's the actual quote from the movie: "Wolfman's got nards!" It was written by two California guys -- Shane Black and Fred Dekker. So I don't know.

I need to read some of those more recent Thomas Pynchon books. I love The Crying of Lot 49. I think I'm maybe not intelligent enough to understand Gravity's Rainbow.
@the_midnightcitizenpodcast2 жыл бұрын
I don't think anyone is. At least, you're not meant to read and internalize every word or thought. The text is meant to wash over you, I think. I kind of liken reading Pynchon to watching "2001" or anything by David Lynch. It's more of an abstract experience than anything else.

It's ok to split infinitives- I learned that one from Star Trek.
@the_midnightcitizenpodcast2 жыл бұрын
I did, too! In fact, that was always my pneumonic device for remembering what an infinitive is: "space is infinite; therefore, 'to boldly go' into infinite space'.

Joining on Saturday nights is difficult for me but I am happy to drop in during the following week. For this one, I identified a lot with what I now consider the mass hysteria of religious groups - the stories we tell ourselves. Hard to believe now that I used to lead prayer meetings. To be honest, I still have a soft spot for some Christian music though, like Rich Mullins. And who can resist Lauren Dangle?
