I saw him play Feste in 1994 (RSC) at Newcastle theatre royal. Perfect part for him, as he got the chance to showcase his beautiful singing voice. It was the best production of Twelfth Night I’ve seen. I’ve seen many over the years. Desmond Barrit’s Malvolio was memorable for his many adlibs to the audience, Tony Britton, who I’d always loved for his stoic comedy turns on TV, played Sir Toby Belch. A perfect night was topped off, when we saw Derek in the Jazz Club on Pink Lane later and were able to tell him our feelings about his performance.

A hard watch! But a significant piece of theatre. Tense and dense and draining. In the face of injustice, with forces conspiring against them, the voiceless can only choose to surrender or resort to desperate measures. This is a historical piece but there are people today facing similar dilemmas.

Being from a Border Reiver family, i really appreciate this. Border Reiver history is not as well known as say the Highland Clans history, but we gave both the Scottish and English Kings of the period a headache for over 200 years. We truely lived in what was called 'The Debatable Land' !

Thank you. Thank you thank you. I am an Egyptian actress and acting coach and just found this gem, I am currently working on tenn. With my students, because, apart from the profound humanity of his work, he truly loved the actors, the profession, the vocation, the calling, and in his writing the characters he is the writer who helped the actor the most to understand the character. Thank you. This is precious.

@@elysiumtc7447 it is very much so, and all the actors did an amazing reading, despite the challenge of the circumstance of performance. I was very moved by their interpretation. I can only imagine how moving they would be on stage.

Hi, I love TW and I have found this super interesting. One thing I wanted to point out about the Streetcar ending that makes it even darker and sadder is that Stella does know that Stanley raped her, or at least, we know that Blanche seems to have informed her that he did. There is a line she says to Eunice "I couldn't believe her story and go on living with Stanley". Stella is very much aware that something at least could have taken place, but having just given birth and virtually unable to leave her husband, and probably too scared to face that reality she has no choice but to pretend that the rape is just a figment of Blanche's madness and believe the lie that it didn't happen, even though deep down she likely does.

Yes, you’re right. Two of the actors brought this up in the workshop & you & they were correct. It just makes the ending all the more horrifying.

This is what high quality drama and acting is supposed to do, its the authenticity of this film that stands out, and resonated with my feelings.
