This is amazing, love Barry Dransfield. Check out Steeleye Span's version on "Time", Gay Woods' voice and Peter Knight's violin are a delight. I didn't know so many people appreciated Barry Dransfield! Thanks for posting this!

The water is wide, I cannot get o'er Nor yet have I the wings to fly; Give me a boat that will carry two And both shall row my love and I. Down in the meadows the other day A-gathering flowers both fine and gay, A-gathering flowers both red and blue I little thought what love can do. I put my hand into one soft bush, Thinking the sweetest flower to find; I pricked my finger to the bone And left the sweetest flower alone. I leaned my back against an oak, Thinking it was a trusty tree; But first it bended and then it broke And so did my false love to me. There's a ship and it sails the sea It's loaded deep as deep can be, But not so deep as the love I'm in; I know not if I sink or swim. Oh, love is handsome and love is fine And love is charming when first it's new. But as it grows old it waxes cold Then fades away like the morning dew.

After years, i can't hear other versions of this song. THIS version made by Barry Dransfield is the only one for me, so inspired and blunt.

Agreed ! It is clearly the best version by far .

When he said sweetest you wrote fairest regarding the flower also i noticed a slight difference between what he said and what you wrote which one is the more precise?

I love Barry Dransfield's traditional English folk style. This version in of this song in particular makes me think of off duty sailors sitting and listening to the ships fiddler playing a mournful but soothing song about a girl that got away on a warm moonlit night.
