Also very interesting is the piano to the right. This is a Kuhl & Klatt (I think) coin piano with xylophone, which later had some more percussion instruments added like cymbal, tambourine and triangle and remodeled to play "G" orchestrion rolls (from the original Kuhl & Klatt "Pneuma" German roll format). It appears in the 2nd edition of the book "Player Piano Treasury" by Harvey Roehl, from 1973, grouped with other instruments at Tom's Mechanical Music Wonderland museum in Manly, Iowa. This was a roadside tourist attraction run by the late Tom Fretty who was not only an advocate for these instruments, but also a wheeler-dealer who was always buying and selling. I don't know the earlier or later history, but in the 2000s it surfaced again for sale on the Mechantiques dealer website (in Eureka Springs, AR), before selling to an unknown owner (who I presume still owns it, and is having it serviced, unless Mr. Neuhaus himself got it). Kuhl & Klatt pianos were never originally sold in the USA in the original era (although they were very popular in Germany, Belgium, and Netherlands; used in many taverns, cafes and coffee houses), so this one is probably a 'collector era' import that likely came over in the 1960s or so. I'd love to hear it play so I'll message Tom to ask him more about it.

Thanks for sharing! This is a Cremona coin piano, built sometime in the 1910s most likely. I'm not quite sure what model it is since the front panels are not put on, but from the legs and half columns I guess it's a style 2. Very nice restoration and it's playing quite well and perfectly in tune! Great to hear! The xylophone is not original and is a later addition but fits in very well. It looks like a well-constructed one, patterned after a Nelson-Wiggen xylo action. Am I right in presuming this is also at Neuhaus Pianos / Mechanical Music Workshop in Milwaukee, or is it somewhere else? The tune we're hearing is a great 1920s pop blues that sounds like it was arranged by J. Lawrence Cook. The tune is super familiar and I'm sure I've heard a recording of it before but can't remember the title at the moment. More about Cremona pianos and orchestrions here: mechanicalmusicpress.com/registry/marquette/marquette.htm

Most Link piano and orchestrion rolls were arranged by G. Raymond (Ray) Deyo (1888-1956 I *think*), a talented local Binghamton NY musician who started with the predecessor firm, the Automatic Musical Co., in 1908 when he was still in college. He kept arranging rolls for them all throughout the 'teens and 1920s, with only two other known arrangers occasionally making contributions (Charles Wellman arranged some very early rolls; and all or most of the Link pipe organ rolls were the work of William Sabin who had played in Sousa's band), up until they quit in 1932, and then he kept making new rolls on his own for a few years after that. Deyo's musical arrangements are beloved by coin piano collectors, not only for his snappy ragtime arrangements of marches (some of them are VERY syncopated and exciting), but also because he consistently arranged VARIATIONS in the music, so when a verse or chorus came back in the music, it was different every time (and these short arrangements were usually just a couple of verses and choruses in order to cram 15 tunes per roll; longer pieces like rags, marches and waltzes frequently had repeats left out so that all the multiple themes could be included). In those days, the usual practice for most music roll companies, except Link, QRS and a few others, was to simply have the musicians arrange one version of each theme (verse, chorus, or whatever), and a little introduction and ending, and then have written instructions for the people running the roll master through the copying machine, to copy-and-paste (and splice) the verses and choruses in the right order to fill out the arrangement. This makes for a "sameness" in the musical arrangement which is less pleasing to some people, but also made the rolls cheaper and faster to produce since there was less arranging and editing cost involved. (This also goes for editing and arranging variations that are worked out or spontaneously improvised by live pianists recording 'hand played' rolls such as for QRS; it still meant much more material to edit per tune, and more time involved). Arranging multiple versions of a theme with variations is more work (and takes more musical creativity), but Link thought it was worth it and so did their customers, since this small Binghamton NY firm competed very successfully with other giant firms like Wurlitzer elsewhere in New York, and Seeburg in Chicago. You can read more about Automatic Musical Co and Link pianos and orchestrions here: mechanicalmusicpress.com/registry/link/link.htm

Thanks for sharing! You might want to update the title and description of this video. This is a Link model A orchestrion at the Mechanical Music Workshop (Neuhaus Pianos) in Milwaukee. (I'm acquainted with Tom Neuhaus and we correspond occasionally). Although probably over 100 Link Piano Co instruments are still known to exist (out of an estimated 5000+ made), less than two dozen of them are orchestrions like this, with a snare drum, triangle, wood block, tambourine etc and playing a different roll format than usual. Only a few model As are on display in public locations like this (I can also think of one at Stahl's Automotive Foundation in Chesterfield, MI). There are also a couple AXs (with xylophone instead of organ pipes) on public display, such as one at DeBence Antique Music World in Franklin, PA, and there are model 2-BE cabinet orchestrions at American Treasure Tour in Oaks, PA; and Clark's Bears in Lincoln, NH. But most Link orchestrions are in private collections and few people get to see and hear them other than collectors' groups and friends and family.
