Great ideas. I have been eating instant oatmeal on my boat for 25 years (just 2 packs per day). Raisins are so 1990. We have bags of dried cranberries as a better substitute. At our dollar stores, pepperoni is way cheaper than beef jerky by the gram - I think chopped up would be good added to these starches. One thing you did not mention is instant stuffing which is good with canned turkey and dried cranberries.

Learning to use such a small tent has taken some time/trial and error. Three weeks of use on the BMT taught me to put my empty pack under my feet and how to manage putting away my quilt in the morning to avoid soaking up wall condensation.

i think you could ditch the umbrella for the benton mackaye. I have the gossamer gear umbrella+the umbrella holder on the g4-20, and it's much better for sun than rain. In the forest it gets in the way, in the desert it's perfect. Your experience may be different. Most people keep the inreach mini on the shoulder strap to make it more accessible during an emergency.
@NeonRamble8 ай бұрын
The umbrella enhances campsite experiences such as cooking, eating, and pooping in the rain. I generally try to avoid engaging in such activities in my tent.

Can you access your inReach without taking off your pack? I also carry the Gore-Tex mitts and Montbell wind pants. Both are clutch! Love the bungee add-ons. I never seem to have enough.

What was your pole set to?
@NeonRamble10 ай бұрын
That’s a good question. It started at 120 cm but I had to lower it and then raise it a bit. Not sure where it ended up, sorry. I hope that experience will reduce the fiddle factor. I want to like this tent.
@NeonRamble10 ай бұрын
I was curious so I just set it up again. Pole length of 110 cm worked well, but every pitch will probably depend on the flatness of each piece of ground, which is my experience with other tents.

Cool Video. Thanks for posting. It brought back pleasant memories of our Foothills trip that you coordinated several yrs ago. I do recognize many of the sections that we hiked, and it was nice to see some sections that we didn't (eg Estatoe side trip). Seems like the Toxaway River had less water this time of year, as well as the HorsePasture River and Thompson Rivers. Did you guys stage a car atthe Palmetto Trail Head and at the Sloan Bridge Picnic Area (where you "walk 200 years" from the end of the Fork Mtn Trail to the Parking lot? From the Palmetto trailhead it looks like you followed mostly a road to the Foothills Trail, joining the Foothills trail someplace around Emory Gap.

I hate fire ants!!!! The base of that power line tower was so weird. Any idea of why they built it that way? Looks like you guys had good weather and used your umbrellas sans hands. I also have the BV450 (in addition to the Berikade Expedition that I think KJ has). I recently tried to stuff 6 days of food into that BV450 but was unable to so I had to be creative when I was backpacking a section of the JMT this past fall. Thanks for posting this video. I would be terrified of going into ANY lake there! LOL.
@NeonRamble Жыл бұрын
Seems like the BV450 tops out at about 4 days of carefully selected and packed food.

I assume easy repair after a hurricane was a consideration for the tower design. It could snap at the base and guy lines which could be field-repaired.

Ran across this in the feed this afternoon. I grew up camping, hiking, fishing and hunting along the Wateree. Your video is from 2016, but if you're still around the area hiking, the trail is a lot different now. We've got the section from the river bridge down to 601 on our channel if you haven't been back. I've seen so many cool things on that trail. Actually seen a lot of snakes at times you wouldn't expect. Moccasins in 40 degree weather, just laying across the trail. Have to be on your toes in there, but I love the area. Glad I ran across this!!
