It was so fun going to Raging Waters and watching the pros get gnarly . My friends and I would then head back to San Fran and skate the H.P halfpipe and dish cause we were so stoked seeing the Boomaramp.

technical he is average or even below, but clean style, although not that special, but good, consistancy wise he is a master...... ALTHOUGH I'd bet 100k ,that he never made a core career , if he borned in the eu, or elswhere than orange county..........

I love how us older ones can totally relate to positioning the "edge of the shoe" for this trick. To note that it is the edge of shoe that catches the board "from below", and with the action of the board rolling over, picks the board up. Well done, the board does leave the ground.

I’m an old fart now at almost 65 , and I first saw Skateboard legend Ty page do probably the first “ kick flip “ just like this guy here at a “ Free-former “ contest . This guy here could be Kurt Lindstrom …. I’m gonna have to see if I have any old pics from that contest … now you got me wondering. 🥴😏

M-80, not a kickflip or heelflip. Been skating for over 40+ years. Rodney Mullen originally called it (kickflip) magic flip. Not claiming to be 100% accurate tho. Someone else please chime in to clarify. Either way, keep rollin' y'all. Fun trick to do, goofing around. Especially variations like M-80 to nose driver, M-80 to manual, M-80 to nose manual, etc. You get the point. Without freestyle, modern skating would not exist. The meek created it all, respect.

Not an M-80 or heel flip....That's a kick flip.

@buddur2277 Sorry buddy but it's not. You use the tip of your toes to flip, not kick. Who cares either way? Matter of semantics. Now go skate

Been skating 53 years. This was called a kickflip. In the 70's Kevin Reed did these with the board flipping and rotating 360 with the front foot wrapping it like an impossible. Then came the "ollie kickflip" which Rodney invented by accident...practicing stationary ollies on his family farm. He was trying to pop it higher, and his foot came off and grazed the rail causing the board to flip. He knew he could do it intentionally which he did and yes, called it the "magic flip" at first, then it became commonly known as the "ollie kickflip", then as time went on simply shortened to "kickflip"...little could we imagine how what was seen as a _ _ _ freestyle move and it's many variations would someday become mandatory for any legit pro on street, ramps and parks. 📚

@@dwayneandrews2059 I use to do kickflips to M-80s and know the difference. But whatever...I got to skate today so life is good.

Kookie. Looks more like a pressure flip. To me anyway. Not like you could ollie that board. 😅

These pioneers named the trick but anyone who came after can call it what they like. Respect the architects.

Ryan was a young prodigy street skater of that time , like Danny Way was a young prodigy for vert. Not many people speak of or skate Freestyle today or during the 1980s before it died off for 20 years. I can tell you for certain, no other kids were doing handstand kickflips and 540 shovits by age 12 like I was during the late 1980s. Like Danny and Ryan, I started passing up many skaters older than me by age 14, starting in my first NSA Nationals contest in 1989. I learned quickly, partially from skating with top pros and sponsored ams and practicing many hours daily. Having stoke and passion for skateboarding, a desire to improve, persistence, and determination certainly pays off.

it hurts to see Tony Hawk skate, no style, looks clumsy and no center of gravity. Everyone else rips!!!!!!!!
@RealSkateStories2 күн бұрын
What he lacked in style at this time he made up for with innovation. That's the greatest thing about skateboarding it individual expression and there is room for all of it. I agree with what you said in the 80s, but as the decades went on it's worthy of note is how Hawk got a lot smoother and truly grew into his own unique and I dare say beautiful style- while innovation most every vert trick known to mankind.

Another sick video! I remember when they built that ramp and it was by far the biggest one ever. The Chin ramp came soon after but it was only up for a few weeks. So cool to learn the history and all of the events they had. I would’ve loved to have seen that ramp in person. And how come so many skaters from that era were so tall?! So many were over six feet.
