Honestly, as an American, there's something kind of beautiful about an Australian preserving this dark and obscure bit of my country's heritage (ugly as it is). As distinct as they are from one another in many ways, Australia and the US have a lot in common too, both good and bad. I think yours is the best rendition of this I've seen, and I appreciate you for singing it.

A brave rendition! To face this song alone, without accompaniment, takes a stout heart. To do so as well as you have marks you a better singer than I by a longbowman’s shot.

Thanks Raymond. An old favourite of mine which I learned from a setting done to Lilliburlero. My mother’s family are from Sussex including the aunt I learned it from.

One of my favourites since I first heard it as a a child sung by Burl Ives. I sing three different versions, including the Lillibullero one.

This song was written by Tommy Makem, NOT Delia Murphy!

According to Pat Conway’s book "The Very Best Irish Songs & Ballads" (Dublin: Walton Manufacturing, 1999), page 44, "Connemara Cradle Song" was written by John Francis Waller (1809-1894). The song was popularized by Mayo-born Delia Murphy (1902-1971) who apparently claimed copyright for it in 1951.

I am slightly awestruck by the way this ballad tells its tale in the form of one surprising and seemingly senseless act after another. Why does Sally Brown not try to escape the notorious multiple murderer? He orders her to undress, motivated not, as we would expect, by lust, but by respect for jewels and fine workmanship. The victim calmly complies, but turns the tables on the would-be murderer by appealing successfully, not to his pity, but to his sense of propriety. Obeying her, he turns around, whereupon, with apparent ease, she kills him. She gloats over her act of justice. and we are inclined to sympathize with her. Yet the story ends appealing to our pity for him. It’s one absurd surprise after another. Like life itself (in a sense).
