I find the easier way to draw the head is to draw it as a box. It's basically the George Bridgeman method, but there's a really good gumroad course on it by reubenlara that's his website as well if you Google it. It should be on the front page of his website. I learned a lot and it's only 10 bucks. He also has a KZbin channel on here

Nice! I liked the demonstration on how to use the direction of the different sections of fur to indicate the solid 3-D body underneath. It's more than just shading. Great video, thanks!

A blending stump is not the same as a tortillon. A tortillon is made of rolled paper, and also comes in different sizes. A tissue wrapoed around a finger works very well for blending, also, especially for large areas.
@theartistnamedАй бұрын
Thanks for the clarification. I love that idea with the tissue.

After being terrified of drawing people for decades, my desire to paint my son (14) overcame the fear. I started learning using the Loomis method three days ago. I found most KZbin lessons a little frustrating, so I've just invested in the book. I'm very excited to begin this journey!

That's great, overcome the fear with the right motivation! Watching someone else draw is helpful but having the right resources and frequently practicing will help us get better.

Hey, Just using the Loomis method while learning to draw a portrait makes the head plane instead of a 3D object. If you combine the Loomis method and The planes of the head, you will get a faster and better understanding of the head. In the beginning, learning with male reference makes it easy to see the planes of the face, and choosing to concentrate on a single angle and the face elements is a better way to improve quickly. 😁
@theartistnamed3 ай бұрын
Thank you for the insight. I will definitely try that out!
@colincannings7946Ай бұрын
Without the gesture and correct proportion, the planes don't work very well. Can I ask, when you say plane, are you referring to value, tone and shading?
@theartistnamedАй бұрын
@@colincannings7946 I believe what ingridousa was saying is that the idea is that Loomis Method is a good start for getting placements and sections of the head but when adding the face elements consider the "planes" or surface angles to correctly build them up. The book "Figure Drawing: Design and Invention " I mentioned in the description of this video teaches this idea. Building the planes for facial features in a 3d space will also help you understand how to shade the facial features correctly.

What do you use to clean or reshape/sharpen your stump?

For me sandpaper is the best! a fine sandpaper above 120 and up will make it really smooth, but I would start with a medium paper between 100 and 50 for cleaning it.

So clear with easy steps to take to get started @theartistnamed You reminded me of my own artistic past with this thoughtful and educational video. From age 3 to my mid twenties I used to draw ALL OF THE TIME - and I now know that was due to my ADHD hyperfocus that wasn't diagnosed until recently 😄 I had forgotten how art can help us to process big emotions but your video reminded me of that. It reminded me of my own processing and that it is time to include art as a personal journal of my life again in order to process my ADHD / Hunter Type brain self-discovery among other things 😉 It is always difficult to lose a child no matter at what stage of the pregnancy or age of their life. Thank you for sharing your personal story to help others learn how to process their own grief and trauma through art ❤
