I completely agree with the need to do full life cycle analysis. Where you are wrong is the assumption that the world MUST provide boats that are just used a small amount over a long period. Think like a regulator for a moment. "You want to make product that lasts 40 years to provide 35 hrs/year of recreation at a significant carbon footprint? And there are already enough boats to last the next 30 years if utilization is only raised to 40hrs/year? SHUT IT DOWN! NOW!" I sure hope you were lying about spending $1M for this study trying to cover your butt and deflect regulation to fuel producers. Recreational boating needs a real, appropriate evaluation. What is boating providing in total carbon footprint? Example -a solar electric sailboat can turn a couple to zero carbon run rate -down to just equipment and consumables. In all cases boating is an alternative to some other (carbon footprint) activity. My bet is that people with boats take at least one less airline trip, and thus, almost all provide a reduction in carbon footprint.

Craft usage profile 9:30 While there is allot right about this analysis, the method and assumptions hide major flaws. The study looks at what the boat industry has produced in the past and how they have been used. Then it assumes that must continue into the future with no more than 20% reduction in capabilities. Of course they find that the best solution is for the fuel industry to do all the investing, take all the risks, and take all the flak for producing perfect fuel that will drop into boats with no change! Blame transferred. Regulation deflected. Back to work, no investment, no risk.... The fallacy is called "begging the question" -the argument is true only by making the desired outcome an assumed true given. This leaves me with one question. If the Paris accord is really going to be met, and we bar activity that does NOT meet it, are you really content betting your entire industry that the petrochemical industry will completely convert to zero carbon super fuel that will "drop in"? What does their industry report say? I bet they use a similar reasoning and say they will make token amounts of zero carbon fuel to show consumers will not pay what it costs. And rather than go cash flow negative for a decade, they will simply phase out fuel production as regulation requires. Their report says that they stand ready to phase out production as the market converts to electric renewable -but that isn't happening! This comes out as an elaborate plan for the boat industry to do nothing when confronted with an existential problem. When magic drop-in fuel does NOT materialize in sufficient quantities will the industry shut down and all boats sit idle? Or is your plan to say "OPPS!" the fuel industry failed -REGULATE THEM! Even if the petro industry makes some drop-in magic fuel they will not make more than a superyacht will use. How do you justify the carbon footprint of production to make a 40 year life product when the world is full of boats sitting idle? Why build a boat for fuel that will not exist in sufficient quantities to even power existing boats? If regulators don't see right through this report, they are far too stupid for the task at hand meeting the Paris accord.

you can't get optimized propulsion and re-generation just from varying the pitch, it also needs to vary the camber which means the blades would need to change shape and so this is not the most efficient regeneration possible.
