I am coming to swift this summer, going flatbed. Are there any tips or things you’d recommend to a new driver in the industry? How is swifts flatbed training, is there money in flatbed, what do you haul etc.. there aren’t a lot of videos out there to swift flatbed. Great video and you’ve earned a new sub. Be careful out there
@Flynnyr Жыл бұрын
Swift is a great company in itself, I’ve been in it for exactly 1 year. Id say being open to suggestions or extra opinions would benefit anyone greatly. The flatbed training itself is very informative and straight put. If you are going out of the Greer, South Carolina terminal then the teacher there is really good. Not sure about other terminals. There is money in flatbed as long as you pick the right route. If you get on the ‘triangle’ then you’re looking at around $800 per week. I’ve heard of other routes offering more though. Also the longer you’re in, the more you make because of raises and bonuses. The type of freight we haul is limited, a few are frame rails(tarped), steel coils(tarped), pro master vans, chassis, wood(tarped), trailers, rebar. Thank you for subbing! I’m gonna be putting out another video soon!

All new cruse controls have a +5 setting. Once you go 5 over the set speed it starts slowing down. The are cancelled out by the cruse control unit ether it hits +5 or you hit the brakes. This is why I Dont ever use cruise control, way to many autopilot systems come on. It’s my truck and I’ll decide what it does.

@@aphidcart there are times where it gets boring. There’s a LOT of road to travel sometimes and repetitiveness is definitely a thing. And the work you gotta do to secure the load gets you out of the truck as well

If you are running away on a hill, that's on you. Also, that's not the Jake's slowing you down. That's the governor. I guess you weren't told how to properly operate your truck.. I drove many T680s in my career and never had these issues aside from the cruise issue.. My old Swift truck number was 173560
@Flynnyr Жыл бұрын
Oh okay, but If it’s the Governor that’s slowing me down after I reach 70mph then why won’t the jakes activate when I turn them on ?
@Flynnyr Жыл бұрын
Also I’ve never been in a situation where I’ve been running away. I enter each downhill in the right gear and right speed. Just found that weird Governor Jake thing by coincidence.
@joshalex93 Жыл бұрын
@@Flynnyr the job of the governor is to do what's necessary to keep a vehicle under a certain speed.. See, I'm foot to the floor regardless so all that crap doesn't affect me
@chadcunningham7612 Жыл бұрын
Have you considered hunt? They do a lot of equipment and heavy/ oversized. Plus not a high percentage of tarps. I ran for "spd" one of the Daeske companies. The benefits are good 👍
@Flynnyr Жыл бұрын
I haven’t yet. I appreciate the info!
@Luckyducky9222 Жыл бұрын
Override the adaptive by keeping your foot on the pedal. Release to engage jakes. Enter your downhill without the cruise on so your jakes kick in sooner or enter at a proper speed. Your limited speed is due to the company. Don’t tailgate when overriding your cruise. Your cruise is set an Ecco mode so the truck will try to stay at low rpm. With time you’ll start knowing when to start your jake and turn off your cruise before you need it 4 sec later.
@teenrcer Жыл бұрын
yea im having this problem too and cant find anything about it
@Jun3bug25 Жыл бұрын
Just tap the service brake and the jakes will stay on or set your cruise to speed you want and the jakes will keep you around that speed and the freight liners I had would slam on the brakes if the radar would saw certain shadows
@Flynnyr Жыл бұрын
Not in the truck I’m currently in. If I set the cruise to 65, and I head down a hill, the speed will increase and the jakes will not slow me down at all until I reach 70 mph with the governed setting, And even then the jakes aren’t strong enough to keep me under 70 so then I have to manually set the jakes, but since the jakes are already going. It won’t slow me down. It’s really dangerous. My trainer had a truck that the jakes would slow you down if you went 66 and had cruise at 65. Not this truck though
@Jun3bug25 Жыл бұрын
@@Flynnyr I meant you set the cruise 60 or 55 going downhill the truck will keep you around that speed I like to just pick a gear and set the jakes myself though lol it makes me feel like a professional😂

Out of the gate you get paid depending on your route. You have regional, dedicated, “triangle” and out west I believe. The regional from what I hear gets paid more, but they stay in the north east around New York. I’m in the triangle and i got paid 48 cents a mile starting. Now im at 52 cents

@QUIX4U Жыл бұрын
@@Flynnyr So how many gals per mile does your truck need, then work back to a $/c per mile rate to see if that 52 c is actually worth anything. THAT IS UNLESS YOU DON'T PAY FOR THE FUEL YOU USE, NOR THE OILS, nor tires, COF checks etc. At 52 c per mile I'd say you aren't being paid anywhere near the average of 25$ an hour that a general labourer on a (paid work for labour only) farm-hand would get
@Flynnyr Жыл бұрын
@@QUIX4U Yeah I’m definitely not getting paid a lot. It is a mega carrier also I guess I can’t fault them that much. I don’t pay for fuel or equipment or repairs. But for general maintenance like topping off oil or coolant or greasing the 5th wheel I do, just because I don’t wanna wait in line at a repair shop. If I was a lease purchase I’d say my pay would increase quite a bit. I have no information about lease purchase though

The reason why I did was because I didn’t have any tractor trailer experience after I got my cdl. I had done yard driver for 2 years and I drove a straight truck for 6 months.
