I played less than 25 percent of S3K because Tails is too easy, Blue Spheres annoyed me and Knuckles levels are less fun leaving me only beating the game over and over again as Sonic. So I played 4 percent of S3K

I don't like Sonic 3. It feels very chaotic, unfinished and rushed. The zones and acts are like huge mazes, you don't know where to go. The bonus stages are hellishly difficult. The enemies are placed unfairly. I gave up in Carnival Zone, when I didn't find the exit in Act 1 after 10 minutes, game over. Lol. No thanks. I'll happily stick with Sonic 1 and 2, they're the best Sonics ever made.

You are basically just saying that if you optimize a game and/or play riskier it becomes more fun, this is not unique to sonic 3, this goes for almost every game ever so I dont really understand what point you are trying to make, also Sonic games including sonic 3 have completely broken and worthless score systems so I have no idea why youd ever take the scoring seriously.

Sonic games are meant to be played like, 1 time and then "woah, i'm gonna buy the sequel to give more money to SEGA so they can continue making stupid pinball games!", it's a miracle people even play them more than ONCE.

Good video but holy shit the comments are giving me brain damage. I think this video could have used some contextualization of arcade game design in the 90s and how SEGA was also a powerhouse of arcade design and how early home console era were also heavily dipping into this culture. Contextualizing with stgs/btu credit feeding vs playing for survival vs playing for score would have been a more accurate analogy than yoshi mellow mode. (And yes, for stgs especially there's literal written unarguable proof that score is the intended way to play ¯\_(ツ)_/¯)

5:09 This reminds me, specifically when it comes to the original trilogy... I always wanted to do a run where I collect every ring on every level. My problem is, it's Sonic... And Sonic has gotta go fast... Faster faster faster faster faster. So I never actually get around to it. I guess it's the same reason I choose the book appropriate options for Geralt in The Witcher 3. I'm role playing as Sonic. Btw, I'm a millennial who grew up on the Genisis/32X/Sega CD games. So it's kind of weird to think I was role playing before I even played an RPG.

I don't think that playing sonic 3 and using rings as shields counts as "mellow mode" In Yoshi's island mellow mode, you are just jumping around for most of the level, missing all the details n stuff. Obv that wouldn't really qualify as a review if someone played it like that. However in sonic's 3 case, you are still playing the same game. You jump the same way, run the same way. No special abilities included. Your "normal mode" is just playing the game faster and doing fun tricks while at it. By definition it's just a Playstyle. In the normal mode and your "normal mode". You still can go both top or bottom in the levels, and experience the entire game really. You are not locked out of levels by having a low score. This isn't even really a mode either, you are just optimizing your gameplay to earn as much score as possible. And I still don't understand what counts as "completing the level" for you. Do you need to beat it in 90 seconds for it to count? Do you need to kill all the badniks to also get all of the score? Collect all rings? Do all of them at once? by saying this, it's starting to sound more like an challenge and not a part of the game. Do you need to play the entire game in this play style to get the last 50% or complete all the challenges that come with it?

I liked this video! I'm always down for more sonic content as it's likely the game that had the biggest effect on me as a kid. I do play it through every couple of years still. I just can't get into modern games.. too much effort, time and a graphics card that costs as much as used car.

@AlexYardAdventureАй бұрын
What a foolish comment. You make it seem like the way score/performance is calculated is the same between Sonic and Cyberpunk. Put another way: Beating a level without taking a hit is a totally different animal between Sonic 3 and Call of Duty: Black Ops. So yeah, your straw man take reveals your poor comprehension.

Concise explanation for the mellow mode argument: Rings were added into Sonic at the last minute to help balence the difficulty, not only did they help less-skilled players, but they were designed so that players who didn't get hit would be rewarded with Special Stages and big Jackpots for keeping as many as they could. So when you just use ring invincibility to cheese a bossfight, that's a valid way to play, but you're ultimately opting out of fully engaging with the boss.
@kingstarscream320Ай бұрын
Were they actually added last minute? Do you have a source? It makes a lot of sense.

Wouldn't be surprised....sometimes real life tastes influenced the characters' attire. Robert Iler, who played AJ on the show, came to the set one day wearing a Pantera shirt, and David Chase used that fact itself to decide that AJ's character would wear pantera shirts. Sooo perhaps Robert Iler was a Mario Kart fanatic!

If Sonic 3’s point was maximising score, they wouldn’t put insane score bonus as coming at exactly 9:59. This is ridiculous
@PuffyBuffy25Ай бұрын
I think both trying to maximize your score while aiming for the best time bonus, and maximizing score even if it means skirting the 10 minute barrier were both intended ways to play.
@kingstarscream320Ай бұрын
Back then, before internet leaderboards, nobody cared about a scoring system not being perfectly balanced. You can simply choose the avoid the 9:59 bonus.

@@kingstarscream320 I have and it has it's fun; however, proclaiming that playing without these random ass rules is deemed as "mellow mode" is self-entitled nonsense. To act as if we, who have played this game rigorously for DECADES and perfected our runs, are somehow "bad" at the game and are playing on easy mode is ridiculous. I'm very good at this game and just because I enjoy running through the stages at high speeds (which is clearly intended by level design) doesn't mean it's a worse way to play. Obviously, SEGA stands for Service Games and they made arcade games, so they created a score system to compare high scores, not for this. It's a cool challenge but to discredit 99% of players' opinions who don't play with your strict rules of "no special stages, no elemental shields" and whatever else, it's just ridiculous. If i spend too much time exploring and get a time of 9:59 I just get 100,000 points, clearly playing this way is unintentional. I would say that aiming for the lowest time possible is a more objective measure of skill, especially in a level like Flying Battery Act 1. I would have no complaints if this clickbait and self-righteous video was called, "A New Way of Appreciating Sonic 3" or "Giving Sonic 3 more Content" and not being so weird and self-entitled the entire video, but obviously, it wouldn't garner the same amount of views.
@kingstarscream320Ай бұрын
@@hamard1027Score needs to be a part of it, because aiming for time alone encourages the players the cheese bosses and use glitches, which obviously weren’t intended.
@homecheese86252 ай бұрын
FINALLY someone is actually caring about points. I practiced Sonic CD over and over again until I could break the scoreboard by getting over 1,000,000 points, and that was one of the most fun and challenging gaming experiences I’ve had to date. The score adds so much to the games that have one, it’s essentially a different version of a ranking system
@Diamond-v92 ай бұрын
This game would've made sense for CD, but S3andK??? No. The score may be in the manual but this is half an hour of a man discussing about score, and yes the mellow mode is the core game.
