jappedut They are probably original track or close to original track. The line is only used for the Savannahlander (for tourists) and the line is maintained by Queensland Rail.

It wouldn't be a problem if people stopped when they seen the red lights flashing and boom gates going down and the trains whistle blowing they stopped. What sh$ts me is news always make out the train and train drivers as the enemies. Look at how quickly the female news reader blamed QLD Rail.

I did it travelling from Mt Surprise to Forsayth and then from Forsayth to Mareeba. Without a doubt one of the most pleasant train journeys you could take. It's not about the destination, it's all about the ride. Ride it or the government will take it out of service.

I am totally cut up, I went to Cairns with my family, and we didn't get the chance to do it. Gonna have to go back, we went on the Sunlander and returned the same way, our train left the morning that we'd have been on the Savannahlander, so disappointed.

It is a SAR class 24, a few are still used in South Africa for the George to Knysna tourist trains. On this loco also the smokebox door is "Americanised" as the original one has a smooth, flat appearance with just a centre spindle but no knurls on the edge, also the cab window sun shade is removed. I traveled behind a 24 in South Africa 17 years back on holiday.

There are also marker lights and a non-functional bell. Additionally, it now wears a generic 5 chime whistle.

Pity you can't send this loco to South East Queensland to run a tour down here. Be an interesting change to the regular QR steam engines.

Bugger South East Queensland. They have all the bloody locos down there now from QR. We have nothing in North Queensland. You wouldn't like it anyway, as it is an oil burner. NO beautiful smell of coal smoke.

Took a while to respond, but the loco is 24 Class. The additions observed had nothing to do with North British original production. Added at the insistence of its owner

Looks like they unfortionately cannabalised South African Railways Class 19D - Pity as the SAR locomotives are exceptionately beautiful.

Headlight and bell, per owner. Whistle ex NSW 59 class (possibly), vanderbuilt tender, and wheel config standard as supplied to the South African Railways. Probably as ordered by the CME at the time

That's no 59 class whistle! They had a unique (to Australian locos) Hancock chime whistle ex USA.
@Engineer5344

well then North British must of decided add some american look to it. such as the center mounted headlight, a bell above the headlight. a 2-8-4 wheel configuration, a vanderbuilt tender. and a 5 chime whistle.
