This footage is one of my favourites. Watching Sigung perform the first form, viewed from the side offers an aspect to practicing these movements not easily absorbed from a front view of this exercise.

My 1991 footage. I got a copyright infringement notification because of the background from the tv😂. This is really great chi sau.
Here lies the secret to the mystery of Chinese martial art. These simple, soft, and slow gestures seem totally irrelevant to the lightning-fast and hard skills of fighting. In reality, you have to practice for a long time to truly perceive and understand that lightning-fast hard skills are developed through years and years of repetitive practice of these simple, soft, and slow gestures. When you touch the old slim master's hands and arms, you will feel the power even without fighting. That's what they call Kung Fu. The real expert knows whether you have Kong Fu or not by the touch of your hand.

Rest well...It looks as if Ip Man used breathing and alignment. Ip Chun used perhaps breathing & dynamic tension.-Ernie Moore Jr. 小念頭 seems to wind the muscles in a natural contraction. Short moves to break the wound muscle to make it longer and less tense.-Ernie Moore Jr. Lengthen the muscle and anchor from ground to ankle, from ankle to knee, from knee to hip, from hip to waist, from waist anchor spine bones one after the others. Maybe it's a fantastic chisau execution, but it's definitely not the acme of combat training. Chisau is just an exercise like many others, here there isn't footwork-defense-attack theory, how can you think of applying all this in a real context? How can block a boxer punch or violence attack? Traditional martial arts are complete, but they have lost their effectiveness when they exclude their essence: real combat and violence. We train to be the best, not to be average.

Sifu Ho has closed her school now, she is a great practitioner and teacher, I had the luck to train for a short time with her in 1998 / 99 and I am very grateful for the wise things she taught me. Sifu started with Sifu Jim Fung and then moved to Hong Kong where she trained regularily with Sigung Chu for 11 years. I met her just after she set up her school in Rose St, Hurstville, Sydney. One night a big strong looking guy walked in and asked if he could do some Chi Sau with her. He said that he had trained for over 10 years in Wing Chun. Pretty quickly he started to really aggressively try to hit her and I remember that she just did what she is doing in this video - stayed totally relaxed and in control, the guys fists harmlessly missing her by not much. Then she sort of shrugged and he was lifted and thrown backwards into the wall behind him. It was priceless to see the shock on his face. This guy was 220 pounds plus and Sifu Ho was, well, little and very lean. She checked out his Siu Nim Tau and says " You do it all wrong, I can teach you but we have to start from the beginning." He didn't like that at all and stormed out, revved up his big bike and roars off. I can't tell you how proud I felt of her. An amazing example, sadly all too rare, of the true 'women's kung fu' practitioner!
