It sure is colorful! The Brimar 12AT7 in the phase inverter position really smooths out the lead channel.

Wrecking your amps bro
@northfortyrecords29 күн бұрын
How so?
@HoldFastTheTruth13 күн бұрын
@ your amplifiers need to be plugged into a cabinet with proper ohmage at all times, otherwise you need to connect them to a dummy load so that you don't destroy your output transformer.
@northfortyrecords7 күн бұрын
@@HoldFastTheTruth That's why I was putting each amp on standby before switching.
@HoldFastTheTruth7 күн бұрын
@@northfortyrecords unfortunately the risk for damage still remains even on standby. If a tube amplifier is not connected to a speaker cabinet, it has nowhere to send the electrical energy it creates. Think of it like blowing air into a balloon but not giving the air a way to escape. The pressure builds up, and eventually, the balloon pops. In the amplifier, this “pressure” can damage important parts, especially the output transformer, which is like the amp’s bridge to the speaker. Without a speaker to take the energy, the amp can overheat or burn out parts. I just wouldn't do it with such a beautiful boutique amp!
@northfortyrecords7 күн бұрын
@@HoldFastTheTruth Sorry, that's not correct. When a tube amp is in standby, there is no signal sent to the speakers and a load doesn't need to be present. Solid state amps are a different story and absolutely do need to see a load at all times. With solid state, the amp needs to see a nearly infinite ohm load, whereas tube amps need to see their required 16, 8, or 4 (closer to zero) ohm load. Furthermore, if there is no signal from a guitar to the amp's input, there is nothing to be amplified. So there is definitely no signal reaching the speaker out jack.

@@Shadytube2024 Excellent amp. Very straightforward design. If you're looking for Fender pristine clean to Fender fat/crunch, it's great. If you need more distortion, you'll need a channel switching amp or just use pedals. I think it's a really great gigging amp - where you can be loud with a drummer.

What do you mean by impedes? Do you mean anything that's not true bypass? I've always understood a buffer to mean a signal is restored or augmented to its original starting strength.
JENSEN for me ! I really like the warm & crisp vintage sound of it; you can hear the character of the different guitars / pickups much better with the Jensen also... The Weber has a very special grittiness which colors everything. Nothing against alnico speaker, but this one is not my cup of tea....

I agree. The Weber is darker and grittier which works great for dirt and distortion, but I prefer the Jensen overall, myself.

If this was the 40 watt 6L6 version.. the better comparison would have been a Fender Vibroverb combo!! Or at least a Fender Pro Reverb. NOT to a Super Reverb with 4/10’s. 😣 Also, you did not turn up the Fargen’s volume or treble to match. Useless comparison. If this was the 30 watt 6v6… even more so.

Really? You made a speakers comparison with a load instead of using mics? Come on, get serious!
@northfortyrecords9 ай бұрын
I'm assuming you meant phone instead of load. Yes. I want to hear what the speakers sound like in the room. Anyone can tweak/EQ quality mics/pres to sound wonderful in a studio setting. This is how they actually sound without studio fluff. Even when using quality mics, there are a million variances to account for, distances, angles, mics are their own filter, if we're being clinical. This isn't clinical. It's a real speaker in a real room. Look elsewhere for studio sheen tones.
@italoop78509 ай бұрын
@@northfortyrecords Ok. My bad. I thought you were using a load on power amp thru the Fryette to go direct. But still... why using a phone vs. a regular standard mic like an SM57 without tweaking it, simply straight into a preamp and then to A/D DAW? A phone mic is really bad and not certainly a reference paradigm for human hear. Or a distant mic in the room, still not tweaked but kept flat? Did you ask yourself how much of those speakers you are really hearing VS. how much of the phone mic?

Was the Jupiter broken in?
@northfortyrecords9 ай бұрын
The Jupiter will never be as broken in as a 1960's Jensen, so not exactly relevant. In all my experience with the breaking in of speakers, I've noticed about a .0005% difference in how the speaker sounds pre-break in vs post break-in, and that change happens within the the first hour or so of the speaker's first use. To answer your question, though, If I remember correctly, this particular Jupiter LC had about 20 hours on it at the time.

I own this exact same amp (1973), sounds like a ton of brick. Love the dirt/almost fuzz-like tones that you get when putting channel volume at 10 and master gain around 2-3, can’t go higher than that as I am afraid I might pierce an eardrum or make the appartment building collapse! How did it feel to try it at volume 10 and master gain 10? I found this amp by chance, using a lifetime of garage sale luck, paid 40$cnd for it in 2020! It pairs well as a dry amp in stereo with my Orange Rockerverb combo!

I found one of these hidden in the back of the music store I was doing repairs at and offered to take it on as an experiment. I had David Carter of Grind Amplification to go over it with an overhaul. Then. I replaced the speakers with a pair of Celestion 70/80s. The reverb and tremolo alone are totally worth reviving.

Hey, I used to own a blue angel. Just wonder how the clean/ light dirt on the electradyne compare with the blue angel. Does the Electradyne have everything the angel has + more? TY!
@northfortyrecords Жыл бұрын
It's really apples to oranges with those two. In general, the Electra-Dyne sounds bigger, badder, and bolder, with a much wider range of distortions to get, due to its three very similarly-voiced channels. It's also mostly because of the type of power tubes. The Blue Angel uses 6V6's/EL-84's, which are smaller bottle power tubes. I'm running KT-77's in this Electra-Dyne. So, the Blue Angel, in general, will sound sweeter, bubblier, less bold, and have a smaller sonic footprint than the Electra-Dyne, with its giant transformers and big-bottle power tubes. Both great amps and great tones, just depends on what you need! Thanks for commenting.

@@northfortyrecords I've experienced this before with other Eminence speakers. The old rubber shield 1258's I had in my 70's twin were amazing. Fast forward to 2021 when I bought another pair and the "new" ones sound nothing like the old ones to my ears at all. Even accounting for break in period it was night and day. I guess when they make as many as they do and need to source magnets and things from Asia standards can and do drift. FWIW I ended up with two sets for live use: P12Q's for the vintage sounds and a pair of ET65's because I got fed up with chasing tone and settled for mediocrity. Heh.

After many years spent wanting a Blue Angel, I finally got one recently. While this does surf tones very well, the true wonder of it is its incredibly smooth transition from clean to overdrive, while doing it at a very reasonable volume level. The way to set up a Blue Angel is to put the volume up to half way or higher and control it from the guitar volume and tone controls.
