London has a similar system internally in LHR. It goes from the parking lot to the terminal in five minutes. I think this would be a great idea. Some of you guys are just "railfans" as opposed to being reasonable and practical. 🙂

Your TOD comments are interesting. I grew up in Marin during the 1940s and 50s. We thought of transit as an extension of automobiles. Like "Park and Ride." In thinking about TOD I now realize why CalTrain works well. The towns grew up around railroad stations. We had the same thing in Marin with the NWP electrics. If they had just stayed a little longer into WWII we might just still have them.

Watt I-80 west is the worst offender, because the only way to walk out of that station is BY FIRST WALKING TO ROSEVILLE ROAD OR WATT-I80 STATIONS! All three stations are parts of the same park and ride lot and I hate it so much it keeps me up at night

Regarding Marin County. The Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District board of directors were holding out for a second crossing to Marin County. Even though the proposed design of the BART rail cars meant they would be light enough to run on a second deck on the Golden Gate Bridge the board discounted this. That isolated Marin and they had to back out of the BART district. Funny thing is that the BART cars were built light enough to have been put on the bridge. So you see another instance of how political shenanigans have given us a fragmented transit system in the Bay Area.
@todgod8 күн бұрын
If I recall correctly I believe a huge reason as to why BART has a wider gauge is because of the feasibility of crossing the Golden Gate Bridge
@jimprice19598 күн бұрын
@@todgod Yes, and also super elevated curves in some of the ariel sections in Contra Costa County. SRI did a study and found that with a 100 year wind coming from the outside of the curve it could blow the lightweight cars off of the track unless a wider gage was used. Not good! Also.... The Golden Gate Bridge and Highway District charter required that the bridge be turned over to the state once the bonds were paid off. Since the bridge directors have s cushy part time job with lots of perks they have found ways to add expenses like ferries, studies for a second crossing and bridge modifications.

From my memory, Watt/I-80 wasn't supposed to be a final stop,but continue East to Hillsdale Boulevard, etc, eventually having a terminus like Watt I-80 station in Loomis,CA. From what I remember, it was paused due to funding and right of way conflicts. Just North of Watt Avenue is a major interstate junction. The right side ends on Auburn Boulevard but was originally planned to plow through(the highway)Carmichael to connect with the 50/South Sunrise BLVD interchange. The funding, NIMBY, etc, it fell through, and the right of away beyond that is Federal. It is the terminus of the I-80 FEDERAL interstate and thus why there's like 16 lanes to Madison BLVD. The I-80 corridor didn't look like it does today, but at the time of RT being built, it was being built the way it is today. It attempted its right of way requests through the I-80 corridor, but from my understanding, it was squashed due to funding and the fed saying no.

I use the gold line to get to and from work way up in placerville! The little el dorado transit bus has its last stop at the iron point station. Then i take the gold line to the mather field stop, and then the 21 bus to the stop closest to my house! It's a long ride but thats what books and music are for, rad to see you covering my local transit!

My home town has grown so much!! I remember when RT first opened. Sac back then didn't have a lot to do or see so me and the friends would always ride the trains, hop off, kick it at different stations and get back on to another.catch the 1 back home or to Sunrise mall at the end of the night. Watt/I-80 has always smelled like piss lol! The reason for the ice cream names near Alkali is there was the Crystal ice cream and milk factory next to Global Mills. They had a window you could stand and watch them make stuff. Thanks for the video!

The other pedestrian walkway if you will is on the southern end of the I80 and Watt Ave station it could be accessed from Grand Ave. but recently the city closed down that part of the road because to many people are illegally dumping trash it curves behind the Pape forklift equipment place. The city of Sacramento have neglected that area for many years.

Thank you for this report. SacRT is a hidden gem. I have been commuting from Elk Grove to Folsom by bicycle and light rail for about 10 years. Service in 2024 has improved dramatically in terms of on-time performance, clean trains and transit agent presence. The new low-floor Gold Line trains are nice but the old trains are better for bikes because they have hooks for hanging bikes. Shout-out to the E-Tran express bus service from downtown Sacramento to Elk Grove that integrates well with SacRT.

Nice! General construction related comment: I wonder when/if there will be a backlash against using so much wood for multi family houses? Sure, USA seems to be great when it comes to sprinkler systems and whatnot, so it might not be a big hazard to those living in the houses, but from my European perspective those multi floor multi family houses should really be built using concrete, in a way that a full fire in one unit won't harm the rest of the building. 9:30 Great that they plan on high density buildings next to the station. But it's weird that they plan on low density buildings just to the north, closer to the station, than the medium density buildings planned to the west of the high density buildings. Also they should really stop building cul-de-sacs in new areas. It's good enough that the local streets are a detour to the desired through roads. 10:00 I get that it's hard to add paths through peoples gardens, but in this case there is a cul-de-sac just to the right of the station, that seems to be fenced off. Just a few square feet of eminent domain would solve that.
@todgod20 күн бұрын
Yeah I agree the cul de sacs are a pretty outdated design. Hopefully they can fix that before construction

I’m not sure if I’m picking up on a YIMBY bias towards large scale, corporate & institutional development of large sites near stations, as opposed to improving the SFH neighborhoods with incremental upzoning & mixed use intensification. The former is easier & more fun yet makes for weaker cities after the initial generation of flipping. The latter is filled with nimby’s but will be attractive to many older millennials. I don’t blame you for going all in on YIMBY TODs-especially in California, as a younger person, it’s hard not to get caught in the sledgehammer approach to growing unit numbers at any cost.

k street was lame in the 60s and still is. and so will sacramento always be. and it's probably one of the most poorly designed light rails on earth. fixing sacramento will forever be an exercise in putting lipstick on a pig it's an oppressive drab dead end once you're there and you go out and look across downtown from and overpass you'll feel the dread.

The Roseville Rd to Watt/I-80 area -- aka Tri Stations Rd -- had a unique history, I think, being some sort of abandoned freeway project that would have used space from adjacent Roseville Rd (parallel to Union Pacific RR) and then interchange with I-80/Bus-80 within the median. As a result, all of Roseville Rd and Union Pacific is grade separated with massive bridges.... which would be a perfect corridor for light rail expansion to the eponymous suburb to the northeast. IMO, the Tri Stations should be kept as a park-and-ride spur and for local buses, but the mainline Blue track needs to reach Placer County.

VTA is an example of how not to design a transit system using political influence. Although the line passes close by the San Jose Airport the cabbies and limo drivers lobbied to keep it out. Also... It goes up North 1st street to nowhere instead of up El Camino Real.

The Green Line is being built as a transit line that serves the Natomas area, that just happens to end at the airport. The 13 stops between the airport and the downtown train station will make the Green Line an unpopular option for travelers who just want to get from the downtown train station to the airport in a reasonable amount of time. Hopefully the airport express shuttle bus will continue to run after the Green Line is completed.
