This is what I struggle with most, my trainer keeps saying "wrong diagonal". It's has gotten so unbearable, I like to say "left/right" left=rise right=fall. Until it's second nature, it's still a struggle, especially if I want to become a top dressage rider and instructor.

So good. On the comment you made about putting your spurs on? I use my dressage whip with my guy. My horse is older and was a breed show horse for years before his owner started having problems with him going lame. I bought him, rehabbed his foot (which seems to have been the issue - no lameness since) and started working with him to help him become more balanced. First teaching him to move more from his haunches less on the forehand. And then trying to do bending and lateral work to help get him more balanced. He moves well tracking left unusually and has been historically stiff (like a board) to the right. He's much more supple tracking either direction now and much more balanced. His down transitions use to be stiff and jarring and now he's much lighter and better able to carry himself. He still has a long way to go, as do I. I'm still only learning lower level movements and trying to teach him to carry himself also as we go. So for both of us it's a work in progress and taking much longer than had I just bought a young dressage trained horse. I really got alot from the video and enjoyed it very much. I'm going to rewatch it again tomorrow morning and see how the exercises help with improving Coco's progress.

I really like your videos and approach to training. It's nice to see someone who focuses on helping people learn the whys for the hows. It's also nice to see someone illustrating the importance of working up to the result through the process. I think in many cases people go to trainers to learn to ride and the trainers teach them how to "drive" - turn in the car, steer, press the gas, etc. But they dont teach them how the car works. Or the horse as the case may be. And then when the horse doesn't just respond mechanically the rider doesn't know what to do. Not to mention it creates expectations in people that they should just be able to get on any horse and ride and there are so many disappointments and even in some cases dangerous situations created by peoples lack of understanding. So I appreciate this.

What dressage saddle were you using before ?? Do you have any suggestions on dressage saddles for a rider who is in early levels of dressage/eventing ? Leather would be nice

I recommend that you get a qualified fitter to help you. I was riding in a Schleese wave before and then I switched to a Custom for my dutvhwatmblood and a Niedersuess for my half andalusian. Find a qualified fitter to help you out.

Hi Ashley, great video! Can you explain the aids used to stretch the horse? I liked how you said to follow with the connection. That was very helpful. I'm just not sure how to encourage my young mare to stretch, although she does know the word so I'll use that.
@Ashleyshorsesforsale4 жыл бұрын
Squeeze both hands and spread them wide. Then your horse asks to take the reins bring them closer together or move your elbows towards the horse's head so they have more rein to take forward and down without you changing the feel of the contact. When the horse takes the contact, soften your hands.

@Ashleyshorsesforsale4 жыл бұрын
Is it anticipation or is it strength? If he anticipates, I would ask for only two steps and then walk, and slowly build from there. If its strength, I would build up that hind leg more, maybe through renvers on a circle to really isolate it and with more hill work.
@lizgray60264 жыл бұрын
@@Ashleyshorsesforsale 100% anticipation.........so two steps then down to a walk and build to 3 steps and down to walk etc? just making sure I got that right.
@Ashleyshorsesforsale4 жыл бұрын
@@lizgray6026 yes! The same that you do when horses anticipate or rush flying changes across the diagonal.
