The analisis on the video repeat at nausea every economic commentaries and never take in consideration the existence of african colonies, the hight cost of the administration of almost a dozen of colonies ... the atlantic islands were treated as colonies also ... that prevent the need of the industrialization, by the ruler classes ... and a great gold of the salazarism , the cheap of the labor, (and the proibition of srikes and syndicats) ... mainly at the colonies. The thirteen years of the colonial wars, in three african colonies stopped the beggining of industrialization and modernization, with the EFTA market, at sixties and seventies, until 974. The conservatism and nacionalism of the portuguese people, made the rest ... but now we are at the way again ...we are a old and resiliente people !

Portugal no longer has millions of African slaves to build its economy. And no longer can it loot from its former colonies. Portugal will remain to be a poor country for the rest of its history. Low wages, low birth rate and xenophobia will leave the country behind.

Other Western European countries were doing the same thing and they're fine. They also suffer much of the same issues such as low birthrates. Portugal has many opportunities in the tourism and shipping industries. There is no reason why it cannot prosper in the long term.

So in Portugal Democracy=Socialism=corruption=poor nation, they always vote for the same especially the ones who promise the world. Politicians are corrupt and no pride of their nation anymore, money and power above all. Same here in the states.

the Portuguese are a people with particular values. And we could follow the formula that many other countries have followed. We could explore for oil, but the people chose that it is not a clean source like the beach. we could explore valuable ore like lithium, uranium, etc, but the people prefer to preserve the values of the places. we could fill our coastline with luxury hotels, shopping centers and casinos, but we chose to have several nature reserves. we could industrialize agriculture, but people value traditional quality, we could be a fiscal paradise, but the people do not accept this unfair form of enrichment... and much more... these are the many particularities, some of them contradictory, that make many Portuguese not see themselves in any kind of development

I just want to correct one thing, our current government had 30 years to improve the country. The corrupt government is to blame and not Apartheid. Our town's school was a Model C school during Apartheid. After apartheid it turned into a poor mismanagement school and is deflating into a failure.

Thanks for the wonderful video and really well explained! The economic policies im the end of the XIX century were awful for Portugal. The dictatorship didn't do very well as well. Most of the payment of debt success came from implementing the economic plans laid out in the end of the 1st republic, and the growth of the sixties was great, bit also because Portugal was starting from way down and the still catch the end of the 30 golden years 1945-1973 (as to say, the dictatorship ended up being worst for the economy, not better. Corporativism was very very corrupt). And since then, every time we seem to put our heads up.. something always happens (bad politics leads to greater exposure to international crises). I do hope the future brings brighter economic times...

CONSTITUTION REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA YEAR 1945 OPENING That in fact freedom is the right of all nations and because of that, colonialism in the world must be abolished, because it is not in accordance with humanity and justice. And the struggle for the Indonesian independence movement has come to a happy moment safely delivering the Indonesian people to the front gate of the independence of the State of Indonesia which is independent, united, sovereign, just and prosperous. Due to the grace of Allah the Almighty and driven by the lofty desire to live a free national life, the people of Indonesia hereby declare their independence. Then from that to form an Indonesian State Government that protects the entire Indonesian nation and all of Indonesia's bloodshed and to promote public welfare, educate the nation's life and participate in carrying out world order based on freedom, eternal peace and social justice, the Indonesian National Independence was drafted. in an arrangement of the Republic of Indonesia, which is sovereign by the people based on: Belief in the One and Only God, just and civilized humanity, Indonesian and democratic unity led by wisdom in deliberations/representation, and by realizing social justice for all Indonesian people.

Very well resumed!!! Greetings from a Lisbonner in Taiwan. I would mention also some critical elements to your very well-produced resume of the Portuguese historical economic development. I would add the mismanagement of capital given away European grants during the '90s which were wasted on unnecessary infrastructure such as highways in the interior that were later parallel with IPs or ICs (fast ways built in parallel with highways) in the interior of Portugal. This allowed a type of corruption that was tightly connected to the mentioned corporatism. This unnecessary investment in road connections sought to produce income from tolls, but in the end, the IPs and ICs, which are free from tolls, were the most chosen lines for most traveling people who also combined their trips with the existing old national roads. There are suspicions about politicians being bribed by the projects' winners in an under-the-table business. The construction companies that were awarded the highest bid would "compensate" the politicians that helped win the bid. Coupled with the previous points, the education sector was never a priority in the Portuguese governmental budgets. The many teacher strikes are a reflection of such a level of disinterest in education by successive different governments. The stagnated level of high educated graduates is another sign of such depression in education. In the end, it is worth mentioning that corporatism brought a culture of corruption identity to the higher elites connected between corporations and the political parties that are still sustaining today, but decreasing as high education provides opportunities to more people. Also in education, there was always some type of protectionism preventing lower classes to reach higher education. Governments from all parties always had the tendency to reduce scholarships and opportunities to the lower class, which create a cycle of poverty in Portuguese society.

Well, it isnt really like that since the 2000's. Portugal is the OECD country with the best improvement in education. The number of years of school per citizen has doubled from 1991 to 2011. The number of college graduates is reaching the EU average. Much must is still to be done, but it is improving quite rapidly.

Lol none of the drawbacks that you mentioned is the huge issue for investors or entrepreneurs to do business in Indonesia. The biggest one is corruption and hidden fees. Sadly Indonesian government are highly corrupt and always wanted to find channels that generates them money. Which is why they always asked entrepreneurs or investors for extra cash if they want to establish a company or doing business in Indonesia. The government must take necessary step to stopped these but sadly they didn't give a damn about it and this is stressful, as Indonesia competitors like Vietnam, Thailand, and Malaysia can provide entrepreneurs and investors the same access Indonesia can give with no hidden fees at all
