My folks took us to see this in 1971, Mom loved musicals and so did I. We were Catholic Republicans and loved this movie. It is still one of my favorites and i know every song because we had the album record and played it often. I wised out traditions were as good.

To the people who may not understand the historical significance of the scene. In the prologue it’s hinted that the Czar while blessed by the rabbi, hopes that the Czar remain far away from their village, Anatevka, which is in Imperial Russian territory. The soldiers at the bar are there to keep the peace, by any means. Jews, since prior and after the Roman Empire, have been the target/scapegoat of many countries and religions; anything that could be interpreted as potential rebellion was often stamped out - this includes becoming loud and obnoxious in a bar as drinking can make any environment hostile within seconds. This is why Tevye and company almost immediately stop dancing and give the Russian officer their undivided attention as if they ignored him it could be seen as an insult - even more they are dumbstruck that the Russian is congratulating them. This scene hits harder given the Russo-Ukrainian war - as this village could’ve taken place in Ukraine

They come together out of duty, endure the struggles of life, then realize their bond is far deeper than even they knew. Also, it's Tevye, the hard-nosed, pragmatic, dogmatic patriarch who first reaches for the idea of this deeply tender and intimate mutual confession. Masterful story-telling at every level!!!
