Well done! Nice project. Great idea using the heft of the truck rotor as a base. Simpler than others I have seen using that base rotor & the piece of channel. I like the way you keep the weight of the PortaBand off of those 2 screws. So many others miss that important element. 2 screws into a cast magnesium alloy housing concerns me holding the weight of the saw and plate. Even the original SWAG table hangs all that weight from those 2 screws. I did mine a bit differently as a table with 4 legs supported underneath for the weight of the saw. Only the weight of the 10"x10" 1/4" plate on those screws. But I'm in the middle of making a new one and want to use your truck brake rotor and channel idea. Think I'll fab the top of the channel so I can hang my PortaBand w/o removing the handle (hang from the handle). Want to make my new one easier on and off, with as little strain as possible on those 2 screws. THANKS for the great ideas!

Have tried many of these iterations and went with the Hercules stand from HF. It’s just unbeatable imo.
@JayHutchG6 ай бұрын
Yes that Harbor Freight Hercules is nice, but still a little tough/time consuming to dismantle & use saw portable. I don't wanna give that portability up and I'm always in a hurry ;-) Screw on/off. Trigger mech on/off. Handle on/off etc. I'm gonna invest the time upfront.

Nice job , but the brake rotor is cast iron, that's why it wouldn't weld properly. I like you design however. The only thing I would change is the base material

Kinda takes away from the whole idea of portability doesn’t it?!?!

It comes out easily so it's still portable when needed.

awesome job man. I think that weld broke because the cast iron from the disc doesn't like being mig welded sep to a dissimilar metal.

I still haven’t seen a good solution to this on youtube.
@cnccarving Жыл бұрын
im sorry being a jerk but if you used so much work on theis, the you could just bolt a little circle plate onto the break disc and weld the U chnnel to that the idea is great and perfectly made otherwise

So glad to see you didn’t do the usual thing & make the gap wider where the blade passes through. So many others make this mistake & it’s a really bad idea, it basically makes a gap for small pieces to get wedged in. A great build, but I personally would add something to lock it into the channel, if something gets stuck & you try to pull on it the saw will pivot & pull with it. Just a small detail, but worth considering in my opinion. I might have to copy this build for the saw I just bought, up until now the best one I’d seen was Quinn’s on Blondihacks.

Why not the kerf to the front? Easier to replace the blade.

How would you get the table on then? 🤷♂️

1.) Mount table. 2.) Install blade.

*Phenomenal portaband. Worth the wait in replacing my stolen previous model **MyBest.Tools** Variable speed, with an adjustable governor, adjustable shoe, and locking articulating forward handle. It's beefy, but feels just incredibly well built and solid, will eat through strut, emt, rigid, all thread, whatever, all day.*

I'm thinking about buying a bandsaw but it needs to be able to cut a block a true 4 X 4 inches. Is this bandsaw capable?

If you used a switch receptacle combo you eliminate a box and the bit of wire. Unfortunately most of theses band saws are for cut off. You can't pass a long wide piece of metal through to rip more than an inch or two off.

Don't throw out the old front spindle bearing unless you already have. Those things are virtually indestructible, but they need the lone shield removed and an eternity of soaking in gasoline to free up.

Brake rotors are typically cast iron which is likely why your weld failed. You can weld cast but it requires pre-heat, post-heat and specific filler rod.

Well if he continues to have a weld problem he could always just bolt the column down with a piece of angle iron. I think it made a nice heavy stand and wish I had the material to adapt mine. I see you can buy a stand but it list for $170! ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
