An interesting bit of trivia. Josiah Chamberlain barely survived a similar wound that Strong Vincent died of. After Gettysburg, the 20th Maine was assigned a junior surgeon. While this surgeon was fresh out of medical school, he had received the latest training and was better than your typical more experienced surgeon. Chamberlain recognized this when he became ill from some disease like typhus and was treated successfully. As a result, when his regiment was to be assigned a more senior surgeon, he requested that they keep the young doctor. Usually such a request would be turned down but because he was known as the hero of Gettysburg he got to keep him. Later, Chamberlain was promoted and given command of the brigade. During the Overland Campaign he was seriously wounded in the groin and expected to die. Chamberlain's younger brother, the same one depicted in the movie, rushed back to the regiment and asked the surgeon to come with to see if he could save his brother's life. The surgeon came with him and got the assistance of other surgeon who did not think they could do any good. They made an effort to tie off an artery to prevent his eventual bleeding to death. But this did not work and the other surgeon they should not try again because it was just causing Chamberlain needless pain. But the young surgeon insisted they should try one more time and this time they managed to stop the bleeding. But Chamberlain had a painful wound for the rest of his life that would cause problems from time to time. After the war the, the doctor returned to Maine and became Josuah Chamberlain's doctor. Fifty years later in 1914, the same doctor attended his most famous patient as he died, Josuah Chamberlain was 83 years old.

My Dad after 🕊️ 52 B-17 missions in Europe came back to train new bomber crews in the States. He was selected by the base commander since he was a combat vet early on in the war to drive the staff car and pick up two VIPs, and give them a tour of the Army Air Corps base. The earily USO show had been rehearsing and packed up the DC-3s to fly to the base to deploy and do a first run through of the show to be ready to fly the Pacific. Dad was waiting and then did the tour of the base, a long tour. When he delivered them to the red carpet reception at Headquarters, the two exited and one said deadpan ..thank you I have never had a better tour of every Dang pothole on a base BEFORE! Bob Hope then broke out in nearly falling down laughter..... Note the Base Commander was not pleased at Bing Crosby's description. That got Dad sent to a base in Mississippi for that July. OOps !!!

Back in the 60"s, you could go to your local Army surplus store and fine crates full of German WW2 helmets left over from WW2 for dirt cheap. Little did people know each one of those helmets would be worth a fortune decades later. You just never know what you will fine that will hold value

I. Goldberg Army-Navy in Philadelphia was founded in 1919 as I recall- Surplus was an old industry by 1946- there were plenty of surplus places long before Goldberg... Bannerman's Island was a surplus seller in New York state, developing from Bannermans surplus business at the end of the civil war...

In preparation for a long hitchhiking trip way back in 1970, I visited an Army surplus store in Dayton, OH. Bought a large shoulder bag and a pair of leather jump boots - high top, halfway up the calf. Just what I needed, great for hiking and camping, too. Still have them, I wore the boots to climb poles for the Telephone Co. (In the days before bucket trucks) and other jobs as well. They've been resoled 3 times. Americans made things to last back then.

@@WalkwithHistory hi WalkwithHistory, I'm a huge Jimmy fan from China and I've always dreamed of a visit to this museum while due to how far it is between these two countries , it's hardly accessible in a short time. So do you mind if I translate and repost this video to a Chinese video platform to share it with my friends and the potential Jimmy fans there? I came up with this idea cuz I thought a well made virtual video would do us a big fave to really experience a trip to this museum and get closer to Jimmy and his assets, which would be much appreciated . I 'd give you all the credits in need and I won't make any profit from it. And lastly, thank you for your work and video anyway❤️❤️

Just listened to your talk with history episode with John, loved it! I must correct you on something you mentioned Jen, flight jackets are issued to both officer and enlisted aircrew now. I was issued mine along with my flight suits and survival knife during Naval Aicrew Candidate School in Pensacola back in 1984. I flew as an Electronic Warfare Operator for 24 years onboard the P-3C Orion. So not just for pilots and NFO's anymore!
