One of the most important talks on how to avoid the collapse of our life support system and it has only 1,351 views and almost no comments. This disinterest in existential threats is not going to change. But all isn’t lost. These alternative proteins are going to be cheaper, healthier and more desirable sooner than most of us can envisage. How many of us saw the smart phone coming? Where are Nokia and the BlackBerry now? The same will happen to the meat and dairy industry.

It is actualy obvious that we work for others (capitalists) - not for ourselves. We sell our time, knowledge and energy to the capitalist, a middleman who appropriates the results of our energy, time and knowledge. The production for ourselves was taken from us mostly in industrial revolution when capitalists made machines to make more money for themselves (for making goods more and faster). Up to then most people work for themselves and had more time for themselves. Today our precious time depends on a greed of capitalist - if they want more - we have to work more.

Rubbish. All the people who triggered civilization were from same geographic arc in Eastern Mediterranean and Middle East. Same genetics more or less. These people weren't "white", which is probably her agenda to demonize and discredit. Another self-loathing Brit.

Hope the book would be good as this presentation of the book was just terrible. Like the other comment here, The Dawn of Everything was not only a good book but the presentation was awesome as well. This was just terrible with relation to the presentation of the book including not able to see what was on the screen at that end (just terrible). But, hope the book is good

Monbiot , mentored by Sir Crispin Tickell who worked as a UN Ambassador - those wolves in sheep's clothing history has constantly tried to warn us about since at least the writing of the Bible, works for the global elitists as controlled opposition. His policy mirror those of the WEF, set up and run by Klauss Schwab himself mentored by Henry Kissinger. The nation has been groomed to accept Monbiot as opposition but his ideas and rhetoric mirror the Globalist Elitist who consider themselves our overlords on the sole basis of their extreme psychopathy.

There is NOT ONE SHRED OF PROOF that man is responsible for warming, no scientist has been able to calculate the contribution to warming from mankind, and on that basis everything after that is a nonsense and has more to do with a theocratic belief than real science. No banana George !

Dr. Grayling, Have you given up on bathing? In your earlier public talks you encouraged your audience to read Greek, Roman, and Enlightenment philosophers in our baths but of late have gone straight to bed with those references instead. What gives? :) Regardless, your thoughtful and erudite take on the human condition is much appreciated.

35:35 - "there's no good way of providing everyone with animal products." George Monbiot's analysis is couched within a Limits to Growth perspective that's incorrect given that the Earth is a big ball of molten rock. Agriculture is certainly part of the climate and ecological problem, but the fundamental nature of the problem is energy. I've explained elsewhere that Magma Energy/ electricity/ hydrogen can replace fossil fuels entirely, many times over. Given virtually limitless clean energy to spend, agricultural GHG emissions would be reduced dramatically. But further, with abundant clean energy to spend to desalinate water to irrigate land, animal agriculture could be practised to resist desertification, creating arable land from desert scrub. This then eases pressure on natural water courses and forest ecosystems. If we get energy right first, everything else follows. We see beneficial environmental spill-over. Whereas, starting with agriculture; ignoring magma energy entirely to assume limits to growth, Monbiot's solutions are every bit as bad as the problem!

What's so bad about less Population? When the Population was Smaller you did'nt need so many Animals to Feed them, the Worlf was Cleaner and Healthier, and you Could see it in the healthy, Glowing Skins, Really Glowing Naturally not from Make Up. Food was Real did'nt Need to be Trash to Feed more People, there was Less Demand for Evertpything, Clothes, Vars, Electrical Appliances, Transport, by Land and Air. Less Houses. So the Profit was Less then ,but Things Cost less too. So it was Better all Round. The Waste from Humans was less. You did'nt Need to Worry about Garbahe Covering all of Earth, as we do Now with High Population Growth. Statistics and Numbers are Missleading, Population Growth going down 1 or 2% is a Good Thing. The More People there Are the less their Value, More People just mean's more Canon Fodder. Then Some Places where the Reproduction Rate is Dropping, at otherd it is'nt. So is it Right to let Growing Populations in Poor Countries go Hungry, but Increase your Own Population because of Race? Humans have to grow Spiritually, to Realize that all Humans are Equal and the Same. The Same World has to Provide for all the Population of the World. In the 1960's, Family Planning was Advised, it was a very Sensible Step for Humanity, Then the Tragedy happened, the Millitary Industrial Complex and Corrupt Demovracy with Unregulated Capitalism Took Over, which meant More People Required for Cannon Fodder, More Voters Needed to Form Lying Corrupt Governments, when More People Would'nt get Jobs, more Poor Helpless Population to Divide and Exploit, People so Busy trying to Survive that they Could'nt Understand that they were Being Lied to about Everything, All their Human Rights were being Stolen along with their Money,Dignity and Respect. So it did'nt Matter if Millions of Children were being Slaughtered for Profit. As Some Monster Said to a Mother Crying for her Child that Died in a Bombing "Why are You Crying for your Child, Just Make Another One" That"s the Value of Human Life in a Large Population.

I have tried a very popular yet very expensive plant based burger, suffice to say never again. 88% of it's kcal came from rapeseed oil, hardly healthy. It is US that have overpopulated Gaia, (so no need to rewild - we need to dwindle in number) it is US that is living in dishormany with Gaia, it is US that is solely to blame. No doubt he'd be happy for us to eat highly ultra processed vegan food, grown in labs and made by those in white coats.. If you eat food made by those in white coats then expect to be treated by those in white coats or worse still those in blue theatre scrubs. No thanks to ultra processed foods, esp if the ingredient list is more than 1, be that vegan or not. So he eats soy, yet by his own words it's not great 40:00 hardly reassuring, then why eat it... Soy Boy? Eating vegan in time will probably be as good as Doctors smoking Camel cigarettes. If you want to eat vegan, then do so BUT PLEASE don't shove it down or make it compulsory in government tied establishments, schools, prisons etc.

This is an interesting talk but seems to miss the keystone to the whole problem -- money. Everything that damages the enviornment comes down to a basic core of needing to make money. George says a lot about "cultural" changes but that simply won't happen while there is a core concept that any land change has to make someone some money .

There's also INTEGRATED farming where the farming utilises existing urban environments. There are millions of parks, acres of lawns, gardens, road sides, walls, roofs, windows, sheds, greenhouses.... and people have shown you can increase yield by a factor of THIRTY in those settings for food production....

George, brilliant. Simply to the point. The answer to all questions isn't the easy yes, no binary of the current age. As you say 50 years ago our rellies our communities wouldn't ask the question what do we do, they would know you get together and you mobilise ; you become good citizens (not consumers). We act together not individually as we have been taught from kindergarten to university, we act together as good citizens. We are dangerous when we are good citizens, we are sheep when consumers. We cannot change our own behaviour at home and expect to change others, we come together to act as good citizens to change behavior at societal level and the law at a systems level.

"Food production is the primary cause of habitat destruction" - 25:35 He has to be politically correct with women in the audience. Beginning of democracy only men voted, now most voters are women. Men have lost their rights to put down their subjects, so we are overpopulated. Any politician talking about population loses their job. Overpopulation is the primary cause, hominids have been producing food for millions of years.

I simply don't think his figures are correct about photosynthesis being extremely inefficient. I think he is completely missing the costs and energy of the machinery and other costs included in powering and making the labs needed to create alternative proteins.
@SolaRoof
@SolaRoof Жыл бұрын
Photosynthetic conversion of solar energy by grain mono crops is very low, at about 1%. Not only is the conversion so low, but the net energy out is negative - it takes more calories input for fertilizer, petrochemicals and fuel for mechanization than the calories in the carbohydrates that are harvested. Additionally grains (wheat, corn and rice are all annual grasses) have incomplete proteins and are not natural food for humans or livestock. These products are important for a long shelf life and density of carbohydrates that was the biofuel of ancient empires. The plantation economy diversified into sugar, rubber, cork and other commodities during the rise of Colonialism. A healthy and diverse forest ecology by comparison converts solar energy at nearly total utilization in the photosynthetic active radiation (PAR) spectrum. Not only is biomass formed with an order of magnitude greater efficiency, but also Green Water converts Solar Thermal Energy (IR) into cooling that naturally regulates the planetary climate - see GreenWaterCools.org
