A flat-head screwdriver and rubber mallet worked for me. I had to pry a little all around to loosen it up, and then, with a wiggle, it came off without damaging the door. If needed, use Goo off to remove the adhesive.

Looks like a good option. Mounted to the interior, so no ugly parts on the exterior. Also, uses screws instead of adhesive, so it is more secure and there is no adhesive peeling off the finish if you want to remove it. Sure, a kid can get his fingers into the cabinet, but the fingers will not get trapped and the door doesn't open much, so it will not slam on the fingers. The previous owner of our house was a mechanical engineer and he used this type of lock.

In all of these fire-escape ladder videos, they never demonstrate climbing out the window onto the ladder because it cannot be done. At least not safely. And the storage bag is useless. Because once the ladder has been expanded, you will never get it folded sufficiently to fit back into the bag. Might be better to learn how to descend using a climbing rope, as would a rock climber.
