Charles Brooke was James' nephew. It's said James married locally and his son was considered illegitimate due to the racist perceptions of the time.

Thanks for the report! I've flown Finnair to Asia (HKG BKK NRT) few times, they often are the least expensive oneworld carrier between Asia And Europe. Unfortunately the blocked RUS airspace has now limited their services. The Helsinki non-Schengen terminal is quiet in the mornings typically, at this time there are flights mainly only to UK and Ireland. Next I'll be on Finnair's A350 to Las Palmas, used Avios to upgrade myself to Business class, a little extra on the cheap package holiday :)

Thanks for the comment. Enjoy the business class! How did you find the cabin crew on the HKG/BKK/NRT flights? The one from Singapore seemed to have a Singaporean crew. I didn't include in the video, but they seemed very robotic and not particularly friendly (but the Finnish crew on the flight to Manchester were the opposite). Maybe I just got unlucky with the crew, but I'm wondering if this is a wider Finnair longhaul issue.

@@LostwithDrJoe They have outsourced cabin service on the HKG and SIN routes, you often hear the experience varies. The service on HEL-HKG was robotic indeed and rushed. Their Thailand BKK HKT and Japan NRT HND KIX NGO routes have mixed crew, I've found the service really nice usually, that's their strenght.

Sarawak look very quiet but actually Sarawak is the high income state in Malaysia with GNI per capita RM13,204 (2023) because Sarawak is rich with Oil and Gas and also a renewal energy hub in Malaysia....

11:54 Second white rajah is nephew of James Brooke not his son.

@cannotwait2230 That isn't what I read on the info board in the Fort Margherita museum. It says James left everything to his son, who became the 2nd white rajah. I recall also being told this by an academic I spoke to when doing my research, too. But thank you for your clarification.

11:33 The Federation of MALAYA gained independence in 1957. The larger federation, ie. the federation of MALAYSIA was FORMED in 1963. Both Sabah and Sarawak only had some form of self-government prior to Malaysia becoming official on 16th. Sept. 1963. It wasn't a "real" independence but something to justify the formation of Malaysia. Sabah & Sarawak's autonomy are spelled out in the documents of the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA1963). The right to be autonomous is not pluck from thin air but safeguarded by that agreement.

@bungaialoevera Thank you for the clarification, and noted for any future videos on the subject. I got my facts from the curator of the Fort Margherita museum, but yes, it would have been useful for me to separate Malaya and Malaysia in my narrative

What is "real" independence? Malaya and Malaysia had to have outside assistance during the Emergency and Confrontation.
