As a reader who occasionally reads dark romance i think booktok community is truly fucked up when it comes to this matter. at least the "certain" part of booktok. Reading while keeping in mind that its not reality or a thing to romanticize is a one thing and trying to justify it is one thing. so from what i seen so far i can tell u that: THEY DONT HAVE LIMITS AT ALL. (Not only readers but increasing number of problematic authors who gets the enough courage i must add) And thats really scary to admit unfortunately. If u dont know where u should draw the line jus drop it and dont pollute ur mind any further. The more the men becomes abusive and misogynist they just promotes it moreee like btch dont u know what a RAPE is?! or hello since when we find kidnappers attractive?or stalkers? The problem is these sick people doesnt care bout morality and shit when their awful-in-every-possible-way men is muscled up 'heavily' tattooed 7foot with sharper than toothbrush jaw. LIKE AUNTIE I KNOW UR LOOKIN FOR SOME ADVENTURE BUT U WOULDVE HAD A RESTRAINING ORDER TO A MEN LIKE THAT LETS BE F REAL🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻

Congrats on 4,000 subs! I recently discovered your channel through the KZbin algorithm, and your style of video is super refreshing to me. In my opinion, booktube overall can be pretty negative or snarky. That isn't necessarily bad, but I like that you describe both the positive and negative things in what you review. Also, you should absolutely be proud of any milestones that come your way! 🎉

Definitely agree! There needs to be more honest and clear content warnings. Authors are writing about niche and harmful k!nks but aren't informing the audience. The content warnings shouldn't be something general like "depictions of sa" or display of vioIence. There should be explicit content warnings saying this book will explore ____ fantasy or ____ k!nk. Not using accurate descriptions hurts the audience. Lowkey I kinda feel like this is giving off gr°°mer vibes. These books romanticize abusive behaviors without informing the audience that it's a k!nk. They are blurring the line between fantasy and reality.

I think the thing I hate about these extreme dark “romances” is that it’s just… abuse. When I think of a dark romance, I think of things like two serial killers falling in love or like falling in love with a hit man, where there are really dark things happening and the LI is a bad person but *not toward the protagonist*. What’s romantic about a bad person who’s also bad to you, yanno? Nothing imo.

That person who made the comment about dark romance and the media blurring morality is so real. My TikTok fyp has so many different sides to it and unfortunately, I see Killian defenders. I did not like him at all, but I loved Glyndon and only continued the books for the female main characters. I've grown an attachment to them because I love and adore them so much. Makes me upset to see how people call Glyn a hypocrite for choosing Killian over Landon but in reality, she was manipulated by both of them, and I wish she got a different love interest. Also goes for Cecily, I didn't bond with her much, but Jeremy was horrid, and she definitely deserved better. Rina Kent (the author) is a misogynist and ruins most of her female bonds which is so unfair.

She said it so well about Ana Huang. I read her two collections. King of sins and Twisted series, both were so good, but If we talk about "dark romance" I don't think so she delivers it in that way..( No hate to any author)

If i remember correctly Killian from god of malice gaslighted the fmc into thinking that he didn't rape her in the first chapters, he was like no you liked it, i saw in your eyes... and the poor girl was confused... The book litteraly romantisize r*pe and manipulation...

Isn’t dark romance already a niche? I think BookTok is also a niche in the grand scheme of things. I think the problem lies, not with whether the book is published on ao3 or in Barnes & Noble, but in intention and reception. “I was very entertained by this book” and “I want this criminal to exist and date me irl” are 2 different things. There’s a time and a place for fantasies. If you fantasize about real life murderers with real life victims it is disrespectful to do anything but keep it to yourself. Fantasizing about fictional characters that are killers, that’s fine imo. I recently watched a Bailey Sarian video about “the Cannibal Cop” where she touches on the ethics of how far one can go with discussing fantasies before it becomes criminal intent, and it firmed up my position that the fantasy itself is not the issue, it’s the actions taken to commit those actions irl. I think this wouldn’t be as big of an issue if more people went to therapy so they could get a nonjudgmental outside perspective on their feelings and relationships. I don’t think the books themselves are to blame at ALL, but I do wish they had ao3 tags so I’d know more what I was getting into! I feel like a PWP warning would solve a lot of issues. “Don’t like, don’t read” type deal. It’s the responsibility of the individual reader to separate fictional fantasy from desires in reality. Unfortunately there’s a lot of people who don’t consume responsibly. Edit: I should’ve read the description before posting 😂 I agree with everything you said in the description except that it is “inevitable” for us to eventually empathize with real killers like that. I think that does occur, but if you consume dark romance responsibly, can separate it from real life, and can step away from it when you notice it changing your real life behaviors, then you won’t cross those lines.

Thank you for sharing your stance on this. You make so many good points. It's such a nuanced subject. I wish we lived in a world where everyone would go/could afford therapy 😭 & sorry i didn't mean it's inevitable for us to empathize with a real killer, bc if it was me I WOULD NEVER, but I meant more so inevitable for us to grow accustom to those fantasies to a point where we start to crave more and more darker things.

@@DiemmiLe Thank YOU for responding even tho I didn’t completely agree! 😅 That take makes a lot more sense to me. I agree that we can become desensitized to considering darker and darker actions in fiction as romance and ~spice~ after reading enough books that portray them as desirable, but I think as long as they remain fantasies, it’s okay. As long as the author and reader handle it with thoughtfulness and compartmentalize it like you said :)

As someone who does like the occasional dark romance I think there is a need for fantasy to be involved in the dark romance. For example vampire human or fae etc. I think this separates it in the mind. My issues comes in with traditional humans that involve no fantasy elements because then it becomes triggering since that is stuff real people actually go through. Maybe this doesn’t make sense but my thoughts.
@DiemmiLe
@DiemmiLe 4 күн бұрын
wait, that's actually a really good point. Bc when it's set in the real world, in a way, it normalizes the contents of the book. But in a fantasy world, the rules are much different and anything can happen, meaning the morals are different than our own world, too.

Thank you so much for making this video. I absolutely agree making the subject matter that takes place in Dark romances seem romantic is in my opinion not a good thing. I also attempted to read God of Malice and decided not to. I can't root for a relationship that starts out with assault. I couldn't wrap my mind around why the fmc would want to be with him he's a psychopathic rapist there's nothing romantic about that! I've really had to step away from reading dark romance because of the way I feel when I read it which is disturbed. I'm really not trying to poop on anyone's reading taste, I just think having conversations like this are also important to have and often are not had.

16:52 I've had someone have an obsessive crush on me (not to the point of stalking), and it honest sucks and going through it is not romantic. I literally devolped selective mutism from this exprience and it was really bad for my mental health. Since I'm so lucky (/j), it's happened to twice! It really, really sucks. I can see how people would find it (especially the jealousy aspect of it) romantic, though! I don't mean my comment in, like, a petty way and I don't mean to be the kind of person that sees the negative in everything and makes everyone miserable, just though I'd share! I agree with basically everything you said in this video. The real murderer one is especially messed up. I remember something like that happened around 2020-ish as well. Also, I just dont understand how people romancize r@pe. It's traumatizing af. I don't think God Of Malice should have been written, or another of Rina Kent's books (I've never read one, but I've watched video essays (?) and, like, 2 hours videos explaining them). They're just kind of gross in my opinion, and if she wanted to write things like this, like you said, she should go on Wattpad, AO3, etc. Sorry if this is long, lolll and sorry if my english is bad, it's not my first language. Also, you're my favorite youtuber, I would love to see a second part!

that darkest temptation?? I'm honestly not sure. I'd say the annihilator from the darkverse series is the closest i can think to that book. It's the fifth book in a series though. so you'd have to read the first 4. It's not that similar though, only in the relationship dynamic, but not the story.

Thank you for sacrificing your soul TWICE for us-I really appreciate that! 🤭 Jokes aside, I do think they should provide proper trigger warnings for the movie because it's important. If the movie is good, the impact will still be there, even if you know the context. I believe this is Colleen's strongest book because she draws from her own experiences. Also, if I remember correctly, another one of her books was turned into a series, and she even made a cameo in it!

Blake is the one that had a heavy hand in Lily’s costuming. In an interview she says many of the clothing items came from her and her friend’s closets. This shows she literally undermined the logic of the character by giving her designer items before she married a neurosurgeon.

I felt like Rue was the one preventing him from telling her about her boss by cutting him off every time he tried to bring it up. I also wished Rue's trauma had come up more, like she told us she was anxious about eating in certain situations, but we never saw it. Also, I saw the "without lube" line as him saying, "you have preferences, so don't just push them aside for expediency's sake" I read this for book club or I probably would never have picked it up. It was not DNF bad but it didn't reinvigorate my love for contemporary romance or anything
