The story I read when the Dodgers traded Pedro was that Tommy LaSorda thought Pedro had 'no guts'. But he loved Pedro's older brother Ramon.

Trading a prospect that turns into a HOF is worse then trading a star about to hit free agency that wants more money than you can sign him for.

To be fair with the Mookie trade at the time Jeter Downs and Verdugo were two of he highest rated minor leaguers. Jeter Downs was being looked at as the next big super star and people were talking non stop about Verdugo for years.

Your analysis of the Pedro Martinez-Delino Deshields trade tells me that you didn’t do your research and simply went with what you heard happened or thought happened. Following the 1992 season, his first with the Dodgers, they wanted to sign Reed to a 3 year extension but he declined, thinking he could get more money as a free agent. The Dodgers moved on and ended up trading Pedro Martinez to Montreal to fill the leadoff hitting role and 2nd base position in one go.

I believe the offer was for 3 years at 2 million per season. Reed rejected it, didn't get any other offers, and ended up signing with the Padres for 500K for 1 year.

Mookie betts trade was awful. Made no sense then, looks even worse now. It would be like the royals trading away Witt Jr. Or the pirates trading skenes( lol they probably will eventually). But I can't think of a worse trade than that. Pedro trade was wild but he wasn't quite Pedro yet. Still was really good. Cabrera trade was ok. Marlins couldn't afford him anyways. I still can't believe the red Sox traded Betts. He was clearly gonna produce mvp level numbers for the next decade , when they made that trade.

It’s bad because Betts wanted to play in Boston, also. They could have worked something out. They cannot say they couldn’t afford him when they reportedly offered the Soto 700 million. Betts’ 162 game average WAR is higher than Soto’s but they weren’t willing to explore going over 300 million?? He already had won an MVP and a World Series at that point. Of course the Dodgers did a very similar thing with Corey Seager when they stopped at 250 million. I get that was probably more about them disliking dealing with Boras than Seager. After Seager won another WS mvp i was so disappointed in them letting him get away.

The 1987 Smoltz-Alexander Trade was not horrible at the time. Smoltz was a 22nd round draft pick who wasn’t all that promising after two years in the minors. After the in-season trade, Alexander went 9-0, helping Detroit reach the post-season. So he did EXACTLY what he was supposed to do for the Tigers. Smoltz made his debut in 1988 and pitched poorly. When you’re in a pennant race, you have to balance playing for now vs later and Detroit needed help right away. Smoltz wouldn’t look like a HOFer until years later. You can’t fault Detroit for going for it.
