This song is so cathartic, it to me sums up my 12 year first marriage to a woman ill always love. The mother of my daughter. A woman who at one time i made happy til war tore me apart inside. Once i got back from that hell hole over there, i was never the same again. I was just a boy who went into hell and came out a very broken man, both physically and mostly mentally. I became afraid of the unknown, and didnt trust anyone around me. I lost my humanity. She deserved better, and for years til she finally figured that out id tell her that too. She was always dismissive of the topic, blowing it off as i was just being depressed. I was always depressed. Watching my friends die in front of me. And myself taking life from another man, when it wasnt mine to take. I still wish to this day mine would have ended that fateful day in Baghdad. Our base was ambushed and we got rocketed and mortared nonstop. It killed so many innocent men. Atleast it wouldve spared her the humiliation of having to keep being my wife. I was too much of a coward to take my own life. A decision i also regret, as it would have made so many peoples lives better without them ever coming into contact with me. Presently i am stuck her til god takes me, because i have a daughter to the woman i was once so in love with. She finally got tired of trying, and found someone who does make her happy. It gives me enough satisfaction to know she is with someone who deserves her. And nowadays if anyone asks me about the past i deny being married to her and just tell them she got pregnant from a drunken mistake, someone like her would never be married to a lowlife like me. My mind does not work right anymore. Its broken. And i dont want sympathy. I just want to live a quiet peaceful rest of my life. And not ever bother her or anyone ever again. My hope is that my daughter will grow up to realize who her dad is. A murderer. Aweak man who thought he was serving his country, But defended rich peoples money and oil. This was me for a decade. Til i met my second wife, got help and had another child. Now im a better dad husband and all around better person. Ill never forgive myself for what i did to you Megan, but i owe it to our little girl to try to do better. Im thankful that you found better. Because i get to always have you in my life as i always hoped for in the end. I have that through our little girl.
