Why is the priest barefooted? Please explain the significance of this, which is extremely odd.

In the Episcopal Church "personal piety" is expressed in a variety of ways: genuflecting before sitting in the pew, bowing one's head at the mention of the dead, crossing oneself during the Absolution, blessing, etc. Piety is a way of honoring the Holy. For the priest, she finds great meaning in the story of YHWH commanding Moses to take off his shoes as he stands before the burning bush. The ground upon which he stood was the site of the suffering of God's People in Egypt. The EUcharist too, is the site of suffering as it recalls the Last Supper Jesus had with his disciples. Yet the Eucharist is also the ground of celebration because it heralds the coming of the Kingdom of Love. Therefore, our priest takes off her shoes during liturgies that recall both suffering and celebration, namely principle Sunday Eucharist, weddings and funerals. She also encourages us to try it out just once to experience both the oddness and intentional, embodied prayer taking off ones shoes affords. Does this help?

We are so happy to sing together again, even in this way!
Thank you Laura for continuing to do morning prayer. I am not consistent in catching it but today is our 36 anniversary.....and I find myself quietly reflecting over so many events in our 36 years..Together we have celebrated and mourned the lives of many people close to us. We have been blessed with our own 3 children. Each one the answer to a prayer. And we have had the honor watching them become young adults and follow their own paths. This summer for the first time in many years all 5 of us have had time together here in Nashville. Kevin bought a house in Mt Juliet and Robert and Michelle shared an apartment in Bellvue . Now I am bittersweet as Robert gets ready to leave for N.Y. and follow his dream of earning a PhD in math. Travel will remain a challenge and remote learning could become his norm. Colds and Flu will soon mask the symptoms of Covid-19 and our lives will face new hurdles. But it has been a very good 36 years, even the hard ones! Thank you for giving me time to reflect on a lot and for letting me turn your morning prayer into my own evening prayer!

Thank you for this thoughtful work to bring us into engagement with the issues that may only niggle our minds with regret as we carry out our too-busy days, but have risen to a level that we can no longer put those small impulses aside for later. The impulses are large and tragically visible now, yet perhaps not tragically, but hopefully as they have never been until the loud awakening that is occurring. Acquiring the tools to be a part of a solution is exactly what I feel I need and what you are offering a path to. Thank you.

This is a wonderful introduction to the 'what, why and how' of Sunday service. I learned more in 28 minutes here than I did in several years of Sunday school when I was young.

Thank you for bringing morning prayer to the community we reach, in this prayer, from our homes. You read with the joy of the morning, with the hope the words bring.
