Gotta love that this battle shows how a real army would fight (dwarves) vs a fantasy army (elves). The Dwarves form proper lines 4-man deep while the elves form massive rectangles (didn't happen in real life until the renaissance pike and shot armies). The Dwarves send heavy cavalry to break through the middle and flanks of a defensive line while the elves devolve into a chaotic melee instantly. Meanwhile, you never see dwarves break formation. Even when their lines break they constantly reform into smaller lines and then back into formation, and while they charge, they charge as a formation.

That's the right association. Ultimately, Tolkien compiled his description of the Battle of the Pellenor Fields from the Battle of the Catalaunian Fields and from his description of the relief of Vienna.

I actually hate this scene. It's so weird and gimmicky. In fact, the whole movie is like that. It's a pretty serious book, the films really don't do it justice. It's a shame because the LoTR films were amazingly well done.

The Winged Hussars in the Lord of the Rings was very reminiscent of the Battle of Helms Deep. The depth charges were planted within the wall of Helms Deep, breaching said walls and death followed. Even the Elves fell under such an overwhelming onslaught. Then the Horn was sounded for the Last Stand. All looked grim, yet who showed up at the top of the steep hill? Gandalf with his "Light" and the Rohirrim! They were the Winged Hussars! Makes me wonder if Tolkien had come across the Polish and Lithuanian Commonwealth and the Winged Hussars history.
