BS. No, Karen Carpenter did not lip-sync during her performance on The Carol Burnett Show with her brother Richard. Some say that the performance appeared more live than a recorded performance, and that the trio medley looked live with Carol Burnett. There were a couple TV show appearances where the format of the TV show was lip-syncing, but Carpenters almost always performed live even on television. They performed a lot and the whole band worked together like clockwork for each performance

@@musicman201047 I thank you so much for your public admonishment of my "BS" opinion, especially at this holiday season, sir. My heart is warmed. Now, let's get down to the nuts and bolts of this. 1) Superstar was a hit in 1971, leaving us 53 years to become intimately familiar with Karen's vocal phrasing of the studio version of her performance: this Carol Burnett appearance IS that studio vocal performance. 2) The instrumental accompaniment heard here is the verbatim studio accompaniment - for instance, where do you see the harpist on stage here for the opening glissando? Furthermore, the "horn section" on stage is kept in shadow, because those horn players aren't doing anything. 3) If this is a live performance, where are Karen and Richard's vocal microphones? 4) Notice how Karen makes hits on the tom-toms that are not heard in the audio of this TV appearance - she is not duplicating Hal Blaine's studio recording exactly in this TV performance. 5) Notice how the bass player does not play notes that Joe Osborne played in the original studio recording. Also, we're hearing the sound of Joe's Fender Jazz bass played with a pick - this player is mimicking with his fingers on a Fender Precision bass. 6) Richard played both a Fender Rhodes and a concert grand piano in the original studio version: where is the grand piano part he played that we hear here? Is someone playing it offstage for this Carol Burnett appearance? I don't think so. 7) Where is the string section? Where are the French horns? These facts are my Christmas present to you, musicman201047, sans "BS".

I feel like Karen was very loved and very respected. Her star still hangs high.Theres been very few times since her passing that there’s been a lull around their name, their music, the singers they’ve inspired, cover bands, books and remasters. Documentaries. I feel that this sort of energy snd love was always there for them But Karen’s illness prevented her from accepting or knowing it

@@musicman201047 Contrary, MOST of their TV performances were lip synched to pre-recorded tracks. This fact came directly from Richard Carpenter. His reason for lip synching was that he's a perfectionist and wants their performances to be like their records.

@@musicman201047 You could not be more WRONG. Karen Carpenter is certainly lip syncing to the studio version of the song. I defy you to identify a single moment of this performance that is not identical to the recorded version. Not only is she lip syncing, she's not doing a particularly good job. There are several times when her lips are not moving in sync to the recorded track. You need to have your eyes & ears examined.
