I love the way he gets angry at them. I saw this at a stand up night once, it was bloody hilarious. It was upstairs in a pub called The Norseman in Temple Bar, Dublin. Anyone could have a go and this guy came in with about ten friends. His first joke was laughed at only by his friends, the second joke no one laughed at. He did one more and then shouted at us "what the fuck is wrong with you". That was the only laugh he got, before he stormed off and out, followed by his ten buddies. The host was Dara O'Briain and even he was lost for words for once.

I love how nobody else knows Eric Hitchmough says "I don't agree with that in the workplace" implying he's only said it to David multiple times when doing something inappropriate. So much depth to this show 😂

So been trying to look into this Eric Hitchmough character. Wernham Hogg (Taylor Clarke) had two branches which were merged into Slough. So he clearly doesn’t work at brother Swindon or Slough branch. So he probably one of the 7 board members. Jennifer used to answer directly to the board so probably the most senior manager. Slightly odd for a board member to be a conference coordinator.

I think the funniest thing about this scene (that’s full of different angles of comedy) is that Neil’s address is very effortless, a bit dry, and slightly witty- perfect for your typical English humor, a little fun, but forgettable for the staff. David on the other hand want to desperately for everyone to have a big laugh, his sense of humor is like an older child or teenager, and sadly, is funny in context, but it’s clear how hard he’s trying and it’s essentially making fun of other people. Ironically, the reason the staff isn’t laughing at his jokes is because they “don’t agree with that in the workplace.”

love the detail of Neil doing his welcome speech casually and off the cuff then Brent having notes for his speech and rifling through them as each one fails to land. the reflection of how hard Brent tries and puts effort in to being the "comedian", no wonder he despises Neil so much after seeing him win over everyone without any signs of preperation

‘’Some comedians’’..straight up lying to seem as though he holds his comedy standards to a higher moral scrutiny than most, knowing full well he has made the claw jokes to Gareth! In the build up to his failed routine you can see he takes on the persona of genuinely considering himself a comedian more than a boss. Just like when he plays a few songs on his guitar and soon after he’s talking about laying down ‘drum n bass samples nd shit’ for a mixtape. How impressionable he his to his own view of himself is just genius. ‘Oh, and one more thing’ .. I think the 15 quids worth of damage joke is actually pretty good !

The Office is mostly gold but it unfortunately goes implausibly overboard on the 'people don't find Brent funny' angle. Neil made a dig at Slough and a subtle homosexual reference and everyone's in raptures. Brent goes overboard on the homosexual joke but that still doesn't explain why everyone refused to laugh a little at his droll Swindon joke when Neil had made a dig about Slough. I hope that people can recognise that the only real difference between Brent and Neil is Neil is judged to be more middle class stock, smooth, and more good looking and, as a result, Neil has a natural demeanour of charisma that belies some of his snobbery and entitledness. Jennifer is a humourless corporate type, almost certainly born in to 'real money', who's probably never had cause to make gallows humour jokes in her entire gilded life.

What makes it worse is Neil wouldn't have done a funny introduction speech had it not been for Brent mentioning it just before. Neil was just going with the supposed vibe and his jokes were unscripted and spontaneous, whereas Brent had a set of notes and resorted to copying Neil's jokes towards the end. Absolute brilliance.
