I don't think Lizzie & co were the fastest people to make this journey. George Pilkingtom Mills of the Anfield Bicycle Club was faster, riding various bicycle and tricycles in the 1890s: 1886: Penny farthing bicycle (Solid tyres) 5 days 2 hours. 1891 Bicycle (pneumatic tyres) 4 days 11 hours 1894 Bicycle (pneumatic tyres) 3 days 5 hours 1895 Tandem bicycle (with T.A.Edge) 3 days 4 hours In 1902 J W 'Jack' Stocks drove the journey in a car in just over 2 days 14 hours. In 1903 Tom Silver set a new motorcycle record of 2 days 16 hours.

Turns out I’m a direct descendant of Hugh Mercer. I’m not exactly sure how, but at least that’s what my family had read into. Pretty cool though, huh?

I would like more info please, I'm a Mercer and proven direct descendent of Hugh. It would be cool to link more of the family together.

Only 16 dead in Glasgow and 2.2 million in India and China. Fine but India and China had vast populations compared to Glasgow. In 1900 Glasgow had a population of only 762,000. India had 238,000,000 and China had around 400,000,000. So you can work out for yourselves what the rate of death per capita was for each of those places.

I am descended from many Scottish Patriots. My family is the Appalachian Scottish. Been in US since very early 1600s and still carry 56% Scot in my DNA. If you have never heard of the Battle of Kings Mountain, you should look into it. That was almost all Scot participation and the Patriots were called the Over Mountain Men.

The first world war. Was a needles vanity project costing millions of lives . People laying down their lives for "king and country". Laying down their lives for spoilt squabbling siblings. Nothing changes.

Some years ago, I saw a documentary on the BBC about the Glasgow shipyard workers during WW1. It was about how the workers were using the war as an excuse to raise their wages, going on strike to force higher pay for their work. The general attitude coming from it was that these shipyard workers were scoundrels who were leveraging the need for ships to their own benefit. Being the BBC of course, the countervailing narrative was completely missing. They never mentioned a word about what was being done to the shipyard workers, nor to the women and children left behind when their husbands went to fight for their country. Thank you for bringing this story to light. It should be an example for people today.

Some of the war grave stones include cause of death alongside the date and the name. There is one a mile or so from where I bide which tells of a soldier drowned accidentally while swimming in France.

Stopping Ronaldo and Rivaldo from scoring was an achievement in itself. Scotland got the tactics so right for that opposition and played a smart game. Neither the coach nor the players can be blamed for that defeat, it was rotten stinking luck.

I've been fascinated by the Railplane since I first heard about it and your reading of the story made it even more enjoyable.
@eugenemoyers52362 жыл бұрын
I to have been fascinated by the Railplane ever since I saw an old phot of it. I tracked it down and have learned a s much as I can about George Bennie and his fascinating monorail. It took a bit of searching but I finally acquired a copy of William Black's booklet "The Bennie Railplane. Bennie's railplane was ahead of it's time and sadly a victim of bad timing. Still, it's possibilities were unlimited at the time. It could have change travel in Europe if anyone had given it a chance. I was so fascinated by Bennie's concept that I have adapted it to a fiction short story I will be publishing on Kindle shortly. The names have been changed to protect the innnocent ( and guilty!), but Bennie's creation is easily recognizable.

It is a beautiful way of telling this history. I feel passion in your voice. I am an anti colonialism guy, but I can understand that Scottish people were desperately trying to run away from a very harsh condition... And so they were in this "adventure" in our Latin America. Good luck for all Scots! From São Paulo, Brazil.
@synisterfish Жыл бұрын
Are you an indigenous 'American'? Being an anti-colonial guy and referring to "our Latin America" kinda makes it seem so.
@eduardocajias5626 Жыл бұрын
@@synisterfish No, sorry... I am not indigenous Brazilian. As a matter of fact, my father is a Spanish immigtant from Galicia (or Galiza, which they say It's Celtic). My mother was mixed: Portuguese, afro-descendant and some indigenous heritage.

This story made no sense! Scary, yes. But then you think... so his brother was fighting the choking ghost? Or was his dead brother the choking ghost? And the ghost from America couldn’t find his brother in any other place?! And the choking ghost doesn’t want other ghosts there?! I was all in until then. Ghosts have so many rules.
