Would love to see more videos on how you manage scaling to multiple trucks, cash-flow managment (paying drivers, fuel, net 30-45's etc). Also, I started a FB group for multi-truck (dump truck) owners in hopes of getting this knowledge out there to others like me!

Would a Mack MD Tandem do same as far as functionality?
@baremetalfab
@baremetalfab Жыл бұрын
To my knowledge no, the md isn’t built to haul the weight that these trucks are. The frame is lighter and runs lighter axles. Dump trucks need to be pretty robust. They get beat up on the pit roads and job sites. I would stay away from mid duty unless you are thinking like a single axle dump.

hey man i saw on another comment that you typically charge around $120/hour depending on fuel costs... do you also have an initial fee or like a minimum fee? if i read correctly your clock starts from the pit where youre getting loaded to where you drop off? or is it from the pit > drop off > back to the pit? i was also wondering about how much it costed you to get up and running. other than buying the truck, CDL, insurance, licensing, are there any other permits you need? do you need an MC number as well? thanks!
@baremetalfab
@baremetalfab Жыл бұрын
Pit to pit. No minimums or fees. Just hourly. We schedule the trucks to run as solid as possible. Startup cost other than the truck is gunna very, but 50k would be a bare minimum of what I would have after buying a truck, insurance is expensive, also you don’t get paid for the work you are doing immediately. My trucks are burning about 1200 dollars and fuel per truck per week. And you can easily haul 3k in materials per day. So you need to have enough working capitol to get you through those times until the checks roll in. I also suggest having spare tires purchased and at least the oil and filters for one oil change readily available. There’s a lot that goes into it haha. Point being it takes a minute to actually make money. But it can be done!!!

@@Polskmofo okay, yea I have no clue what your area is like haha, but what I would do is go around and get to know the local contractors, see if they have a need for materials delivery. Call the local pits and see if they are hiring trucks right now. A lot of my business comes from the pits needing trucks for their jobs. Also be good to check with the local concrete plants. That’s how I would guage it. When I started in the dump truck business, materials would be 3 weeks out or more for delivery. Point being, doing your homework before you jump in! Hope this helps!

Hey man is your tailgate air lift? Or high lift? I’m just confused on how you operate your rear door like a standard dump truck but I see the airlift mechanism on the side. Reason asking is I own a similar truck and wondering if I can operate mines without the air life like a regular dump truck door. Sorry if this question is confusing.
@baremetalfab
@baremetalfab Жыл бұрын
Yea it’s a high lift gate that hinges in 2 spots so 99% of the time we only unlatch the locks (air operated) and then it operates like a normal door. If we are hauling debris or want to stack piles closer together then we’ll unlock and hit a different switch for high lift gate. Hope this helps

Great video brother! How do you decide how much to charge per hour when you’re doing a job? And what is the typical hourly rate? I’m here in California we run semi trucks but I have been trying to learn as much information as I can about dump trucks to possibly get into that field
@baremetalfab
@baremetalfab Жыл бұрын
There is a standard rate, and it fluctuates depending on fuel costs. Where I’m at we’re currently running 120/hour. I determine this by breaking down all my costs and adding markup, but also I know a lot of the other dump truck guys, we all talk and keep competitive pricing with eachother. You can also call your local pits or asphalt companies and ask what they typically pay for a 16 per hour.

To become an owner operator, it would definitely affect your insurance rate. Everything else I think would be pretty straight forward I think. And everything I said previously still applies to the contractors you work for. They want trucks that show up on time and work till the jobs done. Limited breakdowns and guys that don’t bitch about what they are hauling.

It will vary depending on how the company runs, but trucks like mine currently run about 125/hr, so if you can run them consistently you can make 100+k per year but that’s the key is consistency. Trucks cost a lot when they run, and even more when they don’t!

@baremetalfab
@baremetalfab Жыл бұрын
The drop axles are typically only used when running down the highway. They help with braking and handling weight by supporting the frame. We don’t run them in the pits because although they are steerable, they don’t turn as sharp. We haul 21-22 tons
@tikhy3545
@tikhy3545 Жыл бұрын
@Bare Metal Fabrication 22 ton for a 6 axle that is horrible in all fairness, how come the lift axle weren't steering when they were in the air, I thought they are connected with steering linkages or are they self steer axles? If you put down ur axles when steering ur truck won't get as much body role and feel like an iron on the road

That’s what legal in the state of az. They aren’t connected to a drive linkage, they are aligned to steer with the pressure of turning. The just follow with the front truck axle does.
