Is this the parents? The offspring should be gone by now, right?
@BayRidgeOwls2 ай бұрын
Yes, you're right. Luna and Leonard moved back in soon after the youngest in their second brood fully fledged. Since all their offspring in that brood had been banded, we can verify it is them by the absence of leg bands.

Why farewell?
@BayRidgeOwls3 ай бұрын
Meaning that this might have been the last we see of these owlets from the second brood. The following night, however, we did hear at least one of them on the roof of the nesting box, so they’re still working out how to hunt for themselves. We have been told to expect the parents, Luna and Leonard, to return eventually.

There's a live mouse in there! Lol. get to practicing kids.

Amazing to see it running right at their feet for hours, with little to reaction from them! Looks like none are ready to try their hand at hunting yet. Too bad the camera battery ran down last night before we got to see what eventually happened.

1:43:26, wow, fierce competition, I must say. They seemed to be very hungry.
@BayRidgeOwls3 ай бұрын
They do seem to be fighting over that food drop a little more than usual, but mom and dad are making plenty of food drops, and all the owlets seem to be getting their fair share!

Hey, what happened to the latest videos? Has a lot happened the last 12 days?
@BayRidgeOwls5 ай бұрын
Yes, a lot has happened--three owlets have hatched! See the newly-posted Highlight video. And the daily clipstream videos are now up to date. (Sorry, we were traveling and our video compile/publish workstream is only semi-automated.)

These birds must eat well because they are MASSIVE. Or are they some type of BO subspecies breed? I’ve noticed UK versions are so tiny.
@BayRidgeOwls6 ай бұрын
You're right, these owls are larger than those in the UK. According to Cornell University's Lab of Ornithology, of the 46 different sub-species of Barn Owls identified worldwide, the North American form (we're in California) is the largest (www.allaboutbirds.org/guide/Barn_Owl).

Wow. Must be a good hunting season for them to have another clutch. Did I hear their other owlets outside calling? Does dad still feed them currently?
@BayRidgeOwls6 ай бұрын
Yes, the local prey population appears to be quite strong. We haven’t seen Leonard delivering prey in the box lately to anyone except Luna, but we have occasionally heard activity on top of the box at night that we imagine might be some food delivery/sharing, or the result of its use as a hunting perch by Leonard and/or some of the fledglings who might still be nearby.
@nastymandy83306 ай бұрын
@@BayRidgeOwls Ah okay. I thought once the parents return to the box, they discourage the fledglings from returning and stop feeding them altogether. Nice to see they're still provided for a little longer. I love watching these two interact from day one. They're so chatty with one another and dramatic at that.
@godrealm996 ай бұрын
All that noise outside- is that their fledged children calling? Are they still feeding them? I love watching these two. They’re so dramatic with how they speak to one another.
@BayRidgeOwls6 ай бұрын
Yes, we think those are the calls of the fledglings who are still nearby, perhaps stopping by on the roof occasionally, maybe to use it as a hunting perch and/or to ask for another meal.
@godrealm996 ай бұрын
Are these the parents? If so, why are they roosting here? Possibility of another clutch?
@BayRidgeOwls6 ай бұрын
Yes, Luna and Leonard have re-occupied the box now that all their owlets have fledged. Lots of footage of their mating behavior, so a second clutch is possible, but we're not sure how long before we might see the first egg of a new clutch.
