Love it! I haven't yet built out the interior, but the space i have retained amd utility use in he truck bed is great. The camper is so light i don't feel the weight except that it makes the leaf spring suspension ride alot smoother.

Very nice review - super job on the bed platform! I've had the same canopy - replete with windows - on my '23 Toyota Tundra for the past ten months. It was installed at OK4WD along with Alu-Cab's LT-50 rooftop tent and Alu-Cab's 270-degree Shadow Awning. Kudos to OK4WD for their customer service. Last spring I did a 9,000-mile coast-to-coast trip with this setup and it performed superbly and remains rock-solid. Within a month or two after the install I did have some water droplets dripping in the canopy's front corners. Not sure where they came from. Haven't seen any water leakage since then but I live in the mid-Atlantic and we've been in a significant drought for the past several months. And I don't drive the truck every day.

Thank you for a detail video. Quick question. The hinges for windows and rear door are just a thick rubber strip, are they not ? And did you pay extra for insurance on shipping ? Thanks in advance.
@Savagecamper26 күн бұрын
Thanks for watching! The Alu-Cab website calls it a "Centre Flex Weatherproof hinge" and they appear to be rubber and composite, but maybe call OK4WD to confirm. As far as shipping, my buddy did not get insurance . He said they sent him multiple pics of the camper shell boxed in 2" corrugated cardboard and on a pallet. OK4WD told him if it wasn't in the same condition or if there were any concerns when he received it to just refuse the shipment and have it sent back. He said there was no damage, not even to the box, when he received it.

Hey! Quick question, are the Alu Cabs lockable from the inside? I’m a solo female camper and that’s one of the biggest hang ups I’ve run into while trying to find a camper shell.
@SavagecamperАй бұрын
@hannahtex6768 a great question! I do not believe they lock from the inside. A lock inside might present safety concerns, say if your vehicle caught fire and you needed to make a quick exit. However some sort of quick release latch from the inside might do the trick keeping you safe from intruders outside, but an easy escape out if needed. Thanks for bringing this up it's actually really important.
@SamoyedMoms26 күн бұрын
I also am a solo female camper and have this Alu-Cab Contour Canopy. It is does not have an inside lock or release -- major oversight, in my view. I have a rooftop tent on mine but also have a bed setup for the canopy. I have an idea for a way to secure the rear hatch from the inside that involves one piece of wood and two grooves and will get that done in '25. There are no doubt other possible solutions. I otherwise love this canopy. Looks great, is highly functional with the sides opening up, and is rock-solid on my Tundra. I also have the windows on mine.
@Bull3tBikes2 ай бұрын
WOW maybe its just the trick of the camera but that thing looks a LOT bigger on the inside than it does outside,thats all the space you really need otherwise its glamping, I like the idea of a lower profile camper especially for clearing low hanging branches etc when on trails also a slight fuel mileage advantage over the big bulky truck campers not to mention crosswinds wont effect you as much not having such a big sail.
@Savagecamper2 ай бұрын
You are correct on all fronts regarding a lower profile. And yes the interior does have quite a bit of room, especially on these old long bed trucks which have a true 8 foot long bed :)

They need to make a flush mounted windshield for these trucks...they make the rear window flush mount though...i need a new windshield for my 81 but dont have the skill to put it in
@Savagecamper2 ай бұрын
When I cracked the windshield taking it out, I knew it would be worth the investment having a pro install a new one. Good thing is it's pretty reasonable to do so on these older windshields. I wonder if they don't make a flush mount due to the inconsistent manufacturing specs. It's amazing how rough this was put together and spot welded from the factory just stamped and squished together
@steviebexoticreptile7720Ай бұрын
After doing some research a company called one stop products makes a flush mounted rear window and front windshield it's pretty pricey but I guess it's worth it I went ahead and placed a order for the glass to come in it supposed to have a tube of sealer glue or something but when It arrives I'll hire safelite glass guy that lives next door to slap it in...I'm just messaging as a update that hopenisnt completely gone for these squarebody trucks

Nice HJ75! The reason its painted red with a white roof and has ultra low kilometres is because it would have originally been a CFA or RFS ute (Country Fire Authority or Rural Fire Service) which are volunteer fire fighting services based in the rural areas in different Australian states. The utes sit in sheds until there's a job, so they do bugger all kilometres per year and are eventually sold off to private buyers when they get too old. Originally it would have had a flat bed tray with a water pump and fire fighting equipment on it which they call a 'slip on'. They still have the same set ups today, but just with new 70 series utes. Old isn't bad, because the 2H diesel motors in them are very simple and extremely durable, albeit slow. PS Im from Australia 😁🇦🇺

@@Savagecamper Even today there's early to mid 1990's models for sale with about 40,000km on them. From 1990 onwards roughly they changed the engine from the 2H diesel to the 1HZ diesel. Just as good but updated.

I really wish the transit was redesigned to be more like the sprinter so it sits a few inches higher stock & then when I add a 2inch lift kit * could put 35 inch tires ... Its the only reason I am going with a new sprinter is because I want to build out my van to live off grid & be able to go to much more overland trails & camp spots that are accessible with much less stress if you have a higher clearance. I hope ford comes out with a better design but I know van life is the primary reason people buy transits. Its a shame b/c I prefer the ford engine & the power it has. BTW Great quality on your kits and wicked ingenuity ... You guys are really impressive. Wish you the best & keep making kick ass products for us all. Cheers

Great build series. Little tip, having done this a few times now, try not to have your sliders anywhere near when you're drilling. The swarf and sawdust gets into the bearings/slides and means you'll need to clean them out. Better to mark, remove the runners, and drill.
