No such place as Scarbados. Insulting to all Scarborians.

Does the 'Danelaw' even apply to northern England at all? Surely it was concentrated on the area south of the Trent & Humber, separated at the time of King Alfred & referring to the land ceded to Guthram's people. It is unclear that this extended as far as the Humber or beyond it. Given, as you say, that these 'Kingdoms' & other political units were nebulous, fragmentary & ever shifting, it is hard to figure the 'Danelaw' as any sort of reality as far north as Yorkshire. Surely Northumbria, & ultimately Yorkshire, as political units, are successors to the former Roman Province of northern Britannia, & maybe from the widespread hegemony of the Brigantes tribe before this? Most Medieval 'Kingdoms' & political entities were, in effect, sub-Roman states, looking for the legitimacy of the Roman legacy to secure their rule, & finding this, in the end, through the 'Roman' religion of Christianity.

My dads last name is Ayton we have been told that our roots come from Scotland and that our family used to have a big pink castle we thought it wasn’t true because he’s Jamaican but our DNA test says we are Scottish and I now see it wasn’t a tall tale

Hi i have been researching and metal detecting at aldby park and buttercrambe for 3-4 years now and i am very thankful that people are actually working on the grounds and the earthworks. I also believe i have found a building that has began to pretrude out the ground. I dont know how to describe the location but it is in aldby park. Around the building i have found old pottery old nails and bits of broken glass. I believe the building to be around 1600s

Very interesting. I'd never heard of your society. The Astronomer Fred Hoyle, a Bingley lad, (Steady-state theory) wrote a book on the North Yorkshire Moors ice-age geology. It is heartening to see folk researching their home turf.

Thank you very much! I really enjoyed it. I've always wanted to go on the tour. In the winters of the 1950's we used to toboggan in the field as children. We also came and rolled our Easter eggs. I remember the excavations in the early 1960's. Jane Sleightholme

My ancestors descend, I believe, from the Evre or Eure family who built Ayton Castle. The name derives from d'Evre. Evre is a village in Buckinghamshire nowadays called Iver.
