Ben - You've called me out in the description, so I'll enter the discussion. Firstly - Your thumbnail claims power meters are inaccurate, then you walk back on that claim in the video. That's very disingenuous. Next up, what you're showing is sticky watts as it's occurring in IV. At 7:55 you say the issue lies at the feet of Zwift? Now to comment on the issue you're showing. This is a well known and well documented issue. ZwiftInsider has a detailed article published on this from December 2020. In response to the comment in your video description (but not referenced in your video) - "So they fail to even recognise the MASSIVE flaw ". This is something both DCR and myself call out in reviews ALL the time. As I see it, this is not a power meter issue. It's the connected recording device that's the problem. See my recent review of the COROS DURA at 15min 9 seconds (I won't post a link as it may trigger comment filters). In this video I show the COROS DURA and a Garmin EDGE device recording data from the same power meter. One has sticky watts, one doesn't. Evidence the problem isn't with the power meter. This is an issue with the COROS DURA (the connected recording device). If the issue was with power meters, as you imply in this video, both units will record sticky watts. From my experience what you're showing here is an issue with IV (which is also present on Zwift) that should be looked into and resolved by the developers of those software platforms. If this is your argument all along, great, we're on the same page.
@titaniumben9923

If you have stated the issue with accuracy and sticky watts in racing plainly for all consumers then I've missed it and will take your word as yoi do have a huge catalogue of vids. Regarding the "disingenuous" charge regarding my statement power meters are not accurate for the purpose of zwift racing. I will direct you to ZADA and the very fact they do not allow power meters as the source of power in zwift racing at the highest level. I made the "mistake" of using Indievelo purely for the built in feature that is shows both power readings at the same time using the same app on the same computer, my mistake was people use this to deflect from Zwift. Why this is even used as a defence is weird as it's established Zwift has this issue and I do not need to make yet another video showing this. The very purpose of this video is to demonstrate how easy it is for people to assign a power meter as primary power and learn to pedal in such a way it takes advantage of sticky watts. They then become more and more effective using this technique, pedalling along totally oblivious. Many in the community do not speak out about it for various reasons. I know some don't get it who watch this video, especially as it's really a niche part of zwift, but it's ruining community races at the level below Zada events. As to it being Zwift and Indievelos fault. I've talked to the developers of Indievelo and I'm not pretending to know the true issue, but they have stated it's not something they intend to change as doing so on their end means they have to make up numbers. A Ferrari is a great brand of car and desirable, but no one buys one to get the groceries and take the kids to school. Same with power meters, they do the job they were originally designed to do, provide power data when power is being produced, the original intended use was never racing on Zwift or other online platform, they just happen to be able to do the job if you are keeping inside their working window. People find it hard to understand this, and I know I do not have the skills to produce a concise easy to understand video for those outside of the small circle I intended this video to target.

The power meter is clearly doing some averaging or delays power drop off in case it is caused by a temporary comms error. Does it not also do this when you apply power? Does it not ramp up the power reading a little slower than the actual? We could not see your legs moving in the video so hard to say. If it averages on restart of pedalling as well as on stopping of pedalling then maybe the two efects even each other out?
@andersnyberg4034

Actually powermeters are much more accurate than powermeters. Trainers can't get proper measurements, especially the one I have, the elite drivo 2 which use a optical sensor. Sometimes it doesn't recognise which chainring I am at, it can't get accurate readings when pushing hard and letting go a bit, but still pushing high watts. Then it missed lots of watts. Trainers will never be as accurate. Especially not compared to my infocrank powermeter (+/-0,5% or it's a bit less even but rounded up)
@idlerfang
@idlerfang 4 ай бұрын
Trainer and power meter can be totally different things in the aspect of communication protocols. For ANT+, power meter and FE-C (fitness equipment) are two different profiles. In fact Zwift uses torque data when available to calculate power when talking to FE-C device. Not to mention report intervals. This complicated the problem and let's just say if looking at a longer time period (15min+) both power data source are fine.

Do you have the meter set to 3 second average and the trainer to instant? It looks like the trainer instantly reports watts while pedaling while the meter reads zero when you get back on the power.
@titaniumben9923
@titaniumben9923 4 ай бұрын
Both are set to instant. And FAR too many people are trying to find issues other than the sticky watts which is well documented and people who say their power meter does not get this, has not actually done this test, I dare anyone who says their power meter to go up the hilly kom doing this pedalling style and then post the fit file here

I might be missing something, but I've seen many videos, including yours, criticising Zwift and praising IndieVelo as a step forward. However, based on this video, the anti-cheat system in IndieVelo also seems lacking. You were intentionally exploiting the power meter to demonstrate your point, and I agree with your observations, but there was no indication of being kicked out. Is this because you were riding with a pace bot?
@titaniumben9923
@titaniumben9923 4 ай бұрын
Your observations are correct, I was deliberately riding to show how this is exploited on accident by someone who thinks they are simply being efficient. IndieVelo let's you ride around in the general world as I was without issues. When you setup an event, you can choose from 3 options, the second level requires trainer power to take part, the next level up requires trainer power as primary and power meter connected as secondary so that both are recorded into fit file

BTW, accuracy isn't the really correct term, as power meters go to zero when you stop pedaling. It's how Zwift and IndieVelo process the power meter data that causes the issue.

The problem is that indoor trainers are the issue. If you cycling the the indoor trainer and then in let's say your 53 11 and you shift to the 53 21 the flywheel is the issue ... The resistance is not there whilst the pressure on the pedals is immediate...

I have a question about trainers. I had a Direto II for four years. That Direto had something like a five second lag in response and I was never able to find a firmware update. Did Elite find a way to reduce the lag because your experience here is light years better than mine. Full disclosure: I bought a KICKR v6 when the Direto failed and I was seduced by WiFi pairing. I'm 75 and heart rate restricted by a beta blocker so my results can't possibly match yours - this is more about technical interest.

For me the features that George has introduced into indevelo in the last year or so already makes IV by far the better platform for racing. To list a few: Irregular pedaling algorythm that actuaally eliminates riders mid race, Dual recording, Lots more features for event organisers, Live points scorimg in events, Multuple different event formats, Velodrome, Option to fill events with definable number of bots if there are insufficent human competitiors entered, Neutralised starts to races. Wind effects Draft meter - something we haave to pay source to get in zwift. Gear indication on all smart bikes, Virtual gearing for all smart trainers without the need for proprietary hardware, All these have been requested and implemented in a matter off weeks in Iv. Where as from a racing aspect what have we had from zwift in the laast two years? Improvemets to the TT pens, catagory enforcement, and some tweaks to pack dynamics. It has taken them years to implemet features that should be a simple update. Kickr bike shift has been out for about 8 months now and still no gear display in zwift. Some smart bikes have been out for years and still dont have gear indication or steering. I feel Zwift really needs to up their game from a general feature point and especially from a competitive racing standpoint. The price increase isnt an issue for me with Zwift, however the lack of featre development over the last few years certainly is.

Cracking demonstation of the issue Ben. The same sticky issue will happen on all platforms when using a powermeter as i think the issue is written into the powermeter firmare to eliminate micro drop outs from effecting average power in sustained efforts out on the road. However, It shouldnt just be accepted as a feature and left for users to exploit. This is one of the many areas where i feel zwift is failing the racing community. It has been an issue that has been known about and complained about in zwift racing for YEARS. Zwift just seemingly bury their head in the sand about the issue. It is good to see Indievelo allowing event organisers to force the use of smart trainer as the primary power source. Dual recording has been native in both indievelo and mywhoosh for months and is another feature that has been repeatedly requested in zwift for YEARS. Neither are the be all and end all for ensuring fair racing, but at least it is a step in the right direction.
@titaniumben9923

Maybe I should pm you before I make videos as you described the issue perfectly. People are still telling me their PM doesn't do this and it must my issue... or telling me it's just a game. Both fail to recognise the issue and do not do the community any good. IndieVelo is brilliant however the juggernaut of Zwift means it's still worth putting pressure on Zwift to be better at educating people.
