Interesting to note that 13,700 pounds in 1932 would be worth around 1.2 million pounds in 2024 which would have been well in excess of $2mil USD at the time. A phenomenal horse. I saw his mounted hide on display at Melbourne museum in 1980 and it was surreal to see. His heart was said to weigh 14lbs and 1.5 times the size of other horses of similar stature. Almost 100 years later and his legend lives on!

Phar lap was so good, for any of you saying he lost the Melbourne cup it was because he had 66kgs on him! Most Melbourne Cup winners carry 54kgs.

I seem to remember backing Thorate for the win when he drew the pole for a Pacing Cup win and if memory serves he also drew the pole for both his heats in that series. Westburn Grant was something else.

I think what people forget when they talk about “The greatest Horses” is this. Phar Lap never got to have a full career, he died in his prime. However in saying that, to my knowledge no horse in Australian History has run the Melbourne Cup with the weight of 10 stone 10, whilst he didn’t win he still ran! He is also one of the the few horses that did win races with such a huge amount of weight on his back. If you compare him to WINX he ran with on average more than 10kg more than her! I truly believe that if this amazing horse had of been allowed to have run his natural course i dont think that we would have ever seen his equal… but these are just my thoughts about such an amazing horse!

I went and looked at Christian Cullen when he came to Moonee Valley..He was by far the best looking standard bred I had ever seen up till that stage. his neck head his total build. What an athlete..He was a superstar that's for sure...!
