I helped with some of the electrical installation when she was moored at Stockton On Tees, in the early 1970's as some kind of restoration project.

it was too slow are speed limits in britain so low?

umm this is the crich route. its mostly a single line route meaning this is as fast as you will ever see a tram go. in any commercial route they actually go slower due to traffic and pedestrians. britian have similar speed limits to most other countries I know off.

I bet you must have been bricking it creeping up to the Leeds tram. Imagine driving it in Blackpool from Pleasure Beach to Bispham on a Bank Holiday Monday. I think you'd discover what terror was. At least you don't have to dodge cars any more by the Metropole Hotel.

The problem is that ships are getting ever larger, so large that they barely fit as it is, and when something goes wrong, it goes wrong in a big way. And since they are so large the tugs no longer have as much room. There have been some real dramatic accidents this past few years and more are expected. Things like crashing into docks. A 2 stroke takes a bit to go from forward to reverse. It must be stopped and restarted, this takes time. Accidents happen in that time.

The blades rotate to change pitch, like on some propeller driven aircraft. There are a few advantages and disadvantages to it. A few obvious advantages is the ship can reverse thrust simply by rotating the blades enough, while the propeller still spins the same direction. They can also dial in the most efficient pitch for what they need, sort of like a transmission in a car, no one gear is the most effective, its based on what the operator needs at any given time.

@Arabhacks 11 жыл бұрын
The advantage of the azipod is that they are more efficient, And, there is now a minimum level of performance required. There will be no more big ships, small ships, any ships sailing that can not reverse in under 2 minutes. A lot of ships are getting retrofitted, or scrapped, as the newer designs are far more fuel efficient as well. The azipod design is a prop and direct drive motor the normally pulls the water, just is a more efficient design, even with the losses of the generators.

@Arabhacks 11 жыл бұрын
Some 2 stroke engines can run reverse, but are not very effective at it. A 4 stroke is only going to work one direction. But azipod is becoming ever more common. As ship traffic gets more dense and as ships get ever larger, a 5 minute delay for a 2 stroke to reverse is no longer acceptable. Now, reverse needs to happen right away. There are several wrecks due to the inability of the ship to stop in time. The US is coming up with ever more complex requirements as well as the EU. Unlikely event?

Yes, some props can indeed allow for reverse. This eliminates the gearbox needed for reverse, you can not normally run a diesel engine in reverse. The ways of reverse are a gear box, or diesel electric, common when several engines are providing power, or a variable pitch prop that can move enough to provide reverse.

@konstantinos1012 That's right, they can change the pitch of the blade's hydraulically without changing Engine Rpm, reducing cavitation, loss of horsepower and increasing speed.

Sweet video! When I was a kid my dad took me around below the stern of a drydocked Huron class destroyer in the Canadian navy and I got to see the the props and rudder, but they were fixed pitch as I recall. Pretty awesome sight to a 7 yr old!

@adamwoodhouse Large marine propellers do not rotate that fast, typically less than 200 rpm, and if you were standing in front of one of the blades when it began to turn you'd just be flipped out of the way.

@maskinisten83 I guess I should have specified that I meant fossil fuel powered turbines, attached to aircraft, where reverse would be activated by altering the propeller's pitch, because you can't reverse the airflow, or the pitch of the internal rotors and stators, without a mechanism more complicated than CPP.

If you have a turbine engine as your powerplant, CPP is your only choice, realistically.

@v12tommy If you have a constant speed engine (which is more efficient and simple to maintain and operate than a varible speed and/or reversible engine) then you need a variable pitch propeller.
@v12tommy

What would be the benefit of the controllable pitch over a fixed pitch prop adjusting shaft speed? Definately looks cool, but seems to me like just one more mechanism that can fail in the middle of the ocean.
