A really interesting video, so I thought I would have a go! Which piece of software do you copy over and how? Please excuse my ignorance, it’s says on the git hub as UF2 file! I could find 2 in the git hub but it won’t drag and drop! Thanks for any help.

Slow? Sure, but still fascinating. Thanks for putting this on. It was really helpful that you including the 'getting it to the emulator' (some detail in the description would be nice too) that's one thing I've always be frustrated by in playing about in retro-computing on modern platform.

I loved this video. I also built my own, however the connected USB Keyboard does not work at all. I have tried several keyboards none of them work. Also tried some UF2 files to upload, but also did not help. I thought the USB hub was the problem, so I tested three different ones. No success. Is there any idea, how can I find the problem? How can I debug?

I put together a kit and the usb keyboard didn't work as well. I checked my job but I found nothing wrong. I ended up desoldering the pi pico while planning to use a differenct pico board.....but I pulled most of the pads and threads off from the fruit-bat in the process lol. After repairing the board with thin wire and green nail varnish the keyboard worked fine with the new pico! I will try this way because I don't want to cut my ZX case for the sake of those ports.

I just purchased the PicoZX, based on the same idea but using vga for it's output. Great bit of kit, fits inside of an existing speccy and can use the existing keyboard. Only down side is, check your tv has vga in, mine does not lol (I really convinced myself it did before purchase!), and I have now purchased 3 vga to hdmi converters trying to make it work on my tv and none recognise the vga signal, just give 'no signal' (it does work on a vga monitor though). The down side is if you build your own hdmi version as you have you cant use the 8x8 keyboard matrix and use an original keyboard at theres not enough pins on the pico, only if you use the vga version that you cant seem to convert to hdmi using a converter due to the signal somehow being a non standard version of 640x480 60hz? beats me!...

This is really cool, but the Pi Zero W is widely available now, includes HDMI out, a micro SD card slot, and USB input for keyboard (or you can make your own and use the GPIO pins). You spend more on parts for the Pico than the Zero W costs.

Thanks! Yes but that wasnt the point. I had the pico alresady £7 and the 2 parts cost £5 so not alot. I have a Pi Zero also now but that for something else to play around with. I really liked the idea of doing it with the super cheap Pi Pico.

I spent ages trying to get this to work, I just couldn't get a HDMI signal on my Samsung TV. I rewired it many times, swapped HDMI cables, HDMI breakout & Pico board and still nothing.. as a last resort I tried it on another monitor and it worked! I got as far as you for now, will still try and find out why it doesn't work on the TV though. (EDIT: +1 hour later and I have sorted the TV issue. The breakout needed 5v in from the Pico VBUS. I didn't know this >.< )

@@retro8brit156 The problem I had was the TV didn't detect anything on it's HDMI port so it wouldn't even let me select that HDMI port. I soldered a pin to the "5" on the breakout board (same as yours). Progress today though, keyboard and sound now working too.

Nice vid! Been toying with the idea of a Speccy on Pico - and it looks like someones gone a dozen steps further! Don't be afraid of using the breadboard to hold the pins and shimming the PCB to tack a few pins (ideally remove to flow the rest, though I personally don't.) While I could point at the odd pin you may have done better, most were fine and appears you re-flowed later anyway - it's a knack and you're pretty much there, and if it was the solder and/or duff flux, you couldn't really get much better from it.

Thanks for the trip down memory lane! My best friend and I bought a pair of these the summer before our senior year of high school 1997-98. Memory is hazy, but I think they were around $250 USD (65 hours of work at my min wage fast food job). I used it to do a few writing assignments, and I remember us transferring games and files back and forth in school using the built-in IR blasters. I also bought a PCMCIA 28.8k modem, and could surf the internet on it (given access to an analog phone line). It had a road atlas as well, no GPS obviously, but it was still pretty cool as a new driver. Certainly a waste of money given the limitations of the device, but I still remember how amazing it felt at the time to have a computer small enough to fit in a pocket. I ended up giving it to a girlfriend who didn't have a home computer, and she dumped me a few weeks later. :) Such is life.

Hi and thanks for the FB tip. And yes i do check for specific values. There is an array that i read all the tilemap data into. I then set the start point for the car in the array and as it moves in the map i move the position. Then reference that position to the array. If its not a road (=2) then it can 't move. Seemed the best way with the tilemap. But im no programmer :-)

The LCD screen is fine, the module doesn't get enough voltage due to the resistance in the battery compartment. All those Grandstand models have the contact issue. They build up oxidation on the contact fins, and they lose spring tension with every battery change. In order to make it work you have to remove the oxidation with some 800 grit sand paper, and you have to bend all 4 contact fins towards the battery by about 1 to 2 mm.

It is possible to power these from a 9V PP3 battery! The one I just got from eBay had already been tested using one, and it was still in the TV when it arrived. I tried it myself and it worked. Not sure if it would cause any damage if used long term though. I've swapped it out for a 6V battery holder instead.

I am afraid it's RAM only, much like the vast Majority of Digital Diaries. Once both batteries are removed at the same time data is destroyed and you have to reset the unit to clear the eventual residual corrupted data (which isn't anything like your data).
