This is a slip jig and intended for dancing at a significantly faster speed ... strange for me, as I'm normally commenting that a tune is being played too fast. Take a look at this one for an idea of dancing speed kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmHKd2x-prlnqZY It is a tune that you sort of grow into and the easiest way to do that is to play it for live dancing - the dancers feet will guide you ps to really get the feel of slip jigs this a classic from the seventies. Different tunes, but they set the stage nicely kzbin.info/www/bejne/gH3IdH-IgJ2KqZo

Thanks. Examples are much appreciated. Not sure I can play that fast yet and it seems very well suited for the fiddle. I will try and do the next slip jig I do a little snappier.

@@philsstuff Hi again, If I may offer a few thoughts ....I understand that much of what I am going to say may not be particularly helpful in the tune a day project you are working on. I doubt I would have had the resolve to do what you are doing ... I applaud you There are positive and negative aspects to both playing from sheet music or playing by ear. I am a 100% ear player who has failed to read music in over 60 years of trying, though would dearly love this ability for learning new tunes. I just don't have that bit of the brain I guess. If it is possible for you, I think you would gain a lot by developing the ability to memorize tunes and to learn new ones by ear. I think it allows you to concentrate on the tune itself and how it sounds and playing becomes much less constrained by the written notes. A good way to do it is to learn the tune from the dots and play it back from memory in relatively 'bite sized' sections at a time, until you have the whole tune in your head. Most sheet music tunes are but a basic skeleton of the tune around which you build subtle ornamentation to make a tune come to life and that is where carefully listening to others playing or to recordings pays dividends. You can pick and chose the type and volume of ornamentation you like. Generally, though 'less is often more' Playing along with a recording helps to really start to develop personal style, and there is software out there which allows slowing down playback whilst maintaining pitch, or it can change the key of the playback to any key you chose ..... 'Amazing Slow Downer' is one example. It can be a long process to really get into it, but it would prove most worthwhile. I have found it comes easier if I just stick to one tune until I really have it under my belt and just how I like it. That might mean playing the tune solidly for an hour or so, in as many different tempos, keys, ornaments, as possible, starting slowly and gradually building up towards desired tempo as confidence and ability allows. One thing you already have right is playing the basic tune correctly at a speed you are comfortable with. This will get faster [where it needs to] in time but is not to be rushed at the expense of the basic tune or your style. Playing at the desired tempo will be easier when half of the brain is not having to follow the score making yes/no decisions [is this a c# or a d] several times a second and only then send signals to the fingers. Sorry, I have rather gone on a bit..... please don't take any of what I have said as in any way a criticism, it may well be you already do much of this already, I just offer my thoughts for what they are worth, and wish i could explain things better.

@@bigoldgrizzly Great thoughts. I would really like to be able to play by ear and memory. Not a skill i have developed for sure. I was such a beginner and so uncommitted that this tune of a day thing has really gotten me better basic skills. But you are right its at the expense of really mastering, memorizing or understanding any one particular tune. Even though I have played all these tunes without sheet music i am not sure I could play any of them off the top of my head. My next goal after I finish this year or perhaps a bit over the summer is to work on learning from memory just a few tunes. I am part of a group called the Valley Youth Fiddlers (I play guitar not banjo) and we have a monthly jam night. I plan to practice up a few of the usual tunes so I can hopefully jam along with the group. Thanks for the feedback definitely welcome.

@@philsstuff My pleasure Phil. I am sure you will find this will help you along. Don't worry if it is a bit slow at first, it is far easier than learning the dots from scratch. ... regards OG

greetings from Coastal Colombia, South America/-I think AI con-nected us as i love banjo music - especially gospel -bluegrass. i will be sharing this with my children. we just bought a family ukelele to play on - just feeling things out; learning as doing- my musician friend PAul recommended that- who plays many instruments by ear. you are a complimentary aspect to our new hobby ..thanks much- - i played piano as a child 6 years - they are taking piano too. my great grandparents were Irish on my mother's side.

Sounding good mate! I think your banjo might out of tune here though. Check if your bridge has moved too!
@philsstuffАй бұрын
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. It wasn't sounding right to me and I checked the tuner several times the last couple days but its telling me its right. I checked the intonation this morning and its odd its right except for the A string. Which seems weird being a middle string it should be good if the E and G are good but for whatever reason when I play a D on the A string its flat. Not sure how I would fix that.
@DannyBurkeBanjoАй бұрын
@@philsstuff ah no worries man keep up the good work! It could be that the string is dead or the slot in the bridge has gone weird. I'd try a new string and if that doesn't fix it a new bridge, cheap and simple fixes

@marcurbain46532 ай бұрын
Hello Michel.

Great job Phil! I love that as part of getting triplets under your fingers, you're practicing the tune both with and without them. So much of what you're hearing in those highly ornamented versions is based on understanding a tune's skeleton and fleshing it out using your "ornamentation vocabulary." The more versions you practice while alternating with a barebones version, the more that vocabulary will grow!
