What defines a tank as the military machine is speed armor and firepower they are a bad example of an rpg tank, but that's not the point.

so to be a good tank you need high health to be able to take damage. defensive abilities to not have to take the damage from the attacks. crowd control to not let those attacks happen in the first place, and protecting teammates to kill the enemy so you don't have to prevent the attacks?

I play a barbarian aarakocra whose mo is to grapple and pull the big hard hitting enemies away. At level 7 he has ac 19, advantage to grapple checks, +11 to grapple checks and movement of 50ft. If the dm sends enemies towards the squishies i have the speed and strength to grab and hold enemies at distance.

There are many different ways to play D&D, but some of those styles push the core system to its limits. Since the core system is not built around the concept of a "Tank" fulfilling that fantasy can be tricky. But keep in mind it's a collaborative game. I'd recommend that you talk to your DM about how you want to play and work together to come up with ways to make that happen within the framework of the system.

Martials have always been better than casters. You can swing your sword and hit dang near every round. Level 1 caster, I have one spell then I can use darts, or a staff, or dagger/knife (depending on edition). Which is what I want to do because I have a d4 hit die and wear armor and can take a hit, oh wait its the opposite of that. If I want to learn spells I have to spend a bunch of money, every level. Sometimes more often so I can create scrolls. All of this takes time and money. As a fighter I'll find a magic weapon and use it to fight everything hitting 70+ percent of the time.

I made a special magic item for my tanks in my party. It's taken a few different forms, but the general idea is its a magic chain that can be thrown at a creature as a bonus action. Basically, make a ranged weapon attack on target, and on hit target takes 1d8+Str/Dex piercing, is automatically grappled, and you can choose to pull them into melee range of you as part of the same bonus action. If you pull them in, their movement speed drops by 20 feet until the end of your next turn, and your next attack against them has an advantage, but you can not dissengage with them until the end of your next turn. Furthermore, if you take the attack action and have a creature grappled, you can use your action to make an attack with the grappled creature. (It's a non proficient Str based melee attack. Both creatures take 2d6+str bludgeoning damage, and the nongrappled creature needs to save or be knocked prone.

A tank is made a tank by how much they punish the enemy for ignoring them. A DM would only need to make sure they react appropriately to these sorts of designs. * (Offense Tanks): Moderate (for a tank) durability, but they get heavy combat buffs if the enemy does not deal with them early. Focus on the squishies & casters, and the offense tanks will bulldoze you because you gave them a chance to buff up their damage and ability to negate damage. (Most Barbarians would fall under this category) * (Defense Tanks): The most durability out of the tanks. Not great at combat, but they can shut down any enemy trying to get by them and minimize the damage their allies are tanking (at least up to a point). Ignore them for the squishies, and the squishies won't be so squishy - and while the defensive tank might not be able to pump out the damage, their allies will sure as hell get the chance. (Fighters would typically fall under this type if trying to tank). * (Support Tanks): The least durable of the tanks, only able to take a few hits before going down. They can't punish enemies on their own, nor can they shut down enemies long enough for their allies to get a shot in. However, they can act as a rallying point for their allies, and as long as the support tank stays up, their allies will basically be supercharged. Ignore the support tank, and the allies will wipe the enemies before they have a chance to make a second attack against the party. (Paladins would typically fall under this type of tank, though normally in a more secondary role to damage dealing). Such are my views, at least.

The real issue is the so-called "smart" enemies are metagaming and are treating the fighter or the barbarian as a bunch of numbers on a sheet, and not as what they are: a big bastard with a big sword right in their face. If "I have 30 HP and that guy only does 1d8+3 damage and has no explicit button forcing me to attack him, I'll just ignore him and walk to stab the wizard 30' away" is the primary reason for your NPC's decisionmaking, you're a shit DM.

Quit watching at 5 minutes when this dude claimed martial classes do less damage than casters in 5E. It was already ludicrous when he claimed that "tank" classes don't have crowd control or defensive buffs for allies. From the damage side of things all of the best "boss killer" builds in 5E are based around martial classes, whether it is a Sharpshooter/Great Weapon Master fighter getting to make 6+ attack in a single round or a Paladin going nuclear and dealing 200+ damage with a single hit. On the defensive side, all Paladins have an aura that either buffs allies or debuffs enemies just by existing. Battle Master Fighters have a ton of maneuvers that let them debuff or disable enemies. Barbarians when raging get advantage on Strength checks meaning they can easily knock an enemy prone with the Shove attack and then follow up with their additional attacks getting free advantage. Cavalier fighters can force enemies to either target the Cavalier or have disadvantage on all other targets. These are just what I can remember off the top of my head. The simple fact is while martial classes may not have great AOE damage or crowd control options they are FAR from unable to act as a disruptor on the battlefield, and any enemy that ignores a Fighter or Paladin breathing down their neck to try and target the squishy caster is gonna have a real, real short lifespan.

D&D is not WoW. Classes have versatility. Clerics are more than healers. Mages don't have to be glass cannons. Fighters can deal out tons of danage. Monsters are as smart as the DM makes them, rather than following arbitrary aggro rules. Now, I am coming from earlier editions, where classes had more options than 5e, but a lot if this is still true. Mage casts stoneskin, mirror image, resist elements, and displacement and becomes extremely hard to kill. Cleric got the same armour and shield options as a fighter, plus protection and healing spells, making him extremely tanky. Fighters, paladins and barbarians got the highest number of melee attack and best chance to hit, along with the most options for melee damage boosts, making them very effective danage dealers. The tank-healer-damage triangle is an MMO invention.

Guardian Armorer Artificer. Besides having several cc spells, it has the simplest but highly effective tool for a tank. Their hits cause enemies to have disadvantage to hit anyone but you. No saving throw, it always works. If the DM makes the mob attack someone else, they're gambling with their turn.

This seems completely incorrect and misses the whole point of the tank role. And the basic requirement of an tank is : High health and either high armour or high damage avoidance / reduction. That's it. You don't need things like taunt or similar because those are unnecessary if you have good movement strategy and know how to actually be a tank. The whole point of the tank is to damage soak in order to allow your high damage companions to kill the thing you are fighting. It really is that simple and I dont know why people think it needs any more complexity than that.

The so-called 5th edition is NOT D&D. It is a TTJRPG light system. All classes get magical abilities. A fighter can heal himself in the middle of combat without a magical source? Yeah, TTJRPG ability. Playing a "dragonborn"? Yeah, that name was ripped off from the Elder Scrolls series and the "race" is a direct rip off of Dragonnewts from Discworld! Got wounded in a big fight and need to recharge? No problem, a short rest magically heals you! That is WEAK! Don't get me started on the so-called 4e. That is even worse. Try playing REAL D&D like 1st or 2nd edition. Yes, you can update combat in that system by making combat D20 as it works the same way. While I can follow THAC0, it is a LOT easier to use D20 for combat and it works either way. The armor bonuses and ability to hit matches up. I'm certain most of you all won't follow the 1st, 2nd/AD&D rules at all. You all would break and FAIL miserably before making it from level one to level five. Yeah, complaining about the original and REAL system is a fail.

Tanking is possible, just play a Spellcaster as they can easily get AC higher than Non-Spellcasters with minimal effort and then have full advantages of being a Spellcaster. The “Squishy Caster” Fallacy is a nice thing to look up and read to help explain how 5e mechanics has shifted things

5e is a trash system. basically built with no clear direction and the creative elements had to be added after the fact. all in an effort to make more money. when the real reason to make a roleplaying system should be creativity. they should have HAD a clear idea beforehand. this is only after 4e failed for the same reason. and wizards just did not know what they were doing there either. then there was the 6e fiasco and the mess with the open gaming license and the MTG fiasco. just a whole lotta money grubbing corporate BS.

An excellent example of how to have a ""real" tank in a ttrpg is the Champion in Pathfinder. They can use their reaction to reduce the damage their allies take, as long as they're close enough. The result is that they actually make their allies more durable than they themselves are in some ways. They still have high defense, mind you. So enemies have to choose between aiming for the durable Champion, or aiming for their allies and dealing with the reaction.
